Someday this will be me.

There’s an article on BusinessWeek Online.com titled Attack of the Gaming Grannies that is like a glimpse at my future:

Barbara St. Hilaire spends about 50 hours a week wielding a machete, dismembering demons and battling a slew of thugs, zombies, and other nasties of the video-gaming world. Having recently nailed a 100% score in Outlaw Golf 2, she’s now focused on mastering the top levels in God of War. It’s a passion that has earned St. Hilaire, 69, the moniker “Old Grandma Hardcore.”

“If you saw her in a grocery store, you would see an old, Midwestern diabetic with thick glasses leaning on a crutch or shopping cart,” says her grandson Timothy St. Hilaire, who launched a blog recounting her gaming exploits—and her colorful expletives. “She’s a polite mother of five and grandmother of 12...but get her in front of a game, and she becomes a monster.”

At the tender young age of 38 I already get harassed by a lot of the kids whose asses I’m kicking in Call of Duty for being ‘too old’ to be a gamer. “If I were your age and still playing video games,” they say, “I’d be embarrassed.” To which I usually reply, “If I were your age and and was getting my ass handed to me by someone of my age, I’d be embarrassed.” I expect I’ll just get that much more satisfaction from fragging these whippersnappers once I reach 69.

Many of those games take a lot more concentration and skill then I can dig up.  Hey I says if it makes her happy and keeps her out of those grannie bars then good for her.
You too.  The gaming part, not the grannie bars.
wink

Les, or should I say DeadGod, I just came to the realization that I have known you virtually [internet-wise] for almost 6 years. And lived in the same city as you, well since you probably moved in. I’ve lived in Canton for the past 14 years of my life. The internet is a small place, no matter what the media may say.

I remember you as being the only guy older than Hoogz on the Detroit CS server.

And roleplaying games. We’re probably gonna be looked at queerly when we pull out those sheets in the old folks home and slay some dragons.

Ah, and maybe not. We are probably gonna be looked at queerly only because we still do it on PAPER…

Hey that’s how i plan on living out my retirement.

Funny thing is that, baring accident and illness, she will probably have a sharper mind than most other grannys out there raspberry

I’ll be looked at queerly in my old age because i intend to stop wearing trousers, see how long it is before they put me in a home.

Neil- Considering there are something like 11 females to each male in those homes if you keeping dropping your pants after you’re placed you could be a very popular man

Tim, I love reading about Grandma Hardcore so keep up the great work on the blog. I’ll be adding her to my blogroll very shortly. grin

Neil, I’ll probably right there along with you.

Spocko, that is a tempting toy. Looks like it would be perfect for First Person Shooters. If you get it let me know how you like it.

Just think of the Google hits you’re going to get from the phrase “old grandma hardcore”.

Meant to reply to this a few days back and got distracted…

Les, or should I say DeadGod, I just came to the realization that I have known you virtually [internet-wise] for almost 6 years.

You didn’t realize who I was? I recognized your username as soon as you showed up. I assumed I must have invited you at some point as I sometimes come across some of the folks from Detroit CS when playing CS: Source.

I remember you as being the only guy older than Hoogz on the Detroit CS server.

Yeah, and I’m even older now. Sad, ain’t it? I miss the Detroit CS server. It’s been my dream to run my own FPS server at some point.

I may take you up on that. I’ve not played a whole lot of CS: Source as I got a little disgusted with all the cheating that took place on most servers prior to its release and once Detroit CS went down I lost interest in playing it much. These days I tend to play a lot of Call of Duty: United Offense multiplayer on the KTF Clan’s servers, but I wouldn’t mind revisiting Counterstrike Source sometime soon. Though as I recall the last time I tried it the game is still plagued with ridiculous amounts of random head shots.

Know I’ve known all along who you were, that’s why I am here. The realization was that 6 years is a long time… At least for us youngins.

Wow that something you don’t see everyday on the internet… Someone accidently typing “know” instead of “no”. It’s usually the other way around. Kind of like how I sometimes mean to say 8 the number and end up writing “ate”.
