Solonor wants to know why I’m so twisted.

OK, that’s not exactly what he’s asking. What he’s actually asking is for folks to list off the five biggest influences on what it is that you find funny.

That shouldn’t be too hard I thought to myself, but then I realized that I’ve got quite a list I can think of off top of my head. Sol lists some ground rules of not using “real life” people such as your parents which wipes out my number one influence: my mother from who I feel I get a good chunk of my sense of humor. Instead, he wants to know what artists most influenced what you find funny. So here are my top 5 in no particular order:

  1. Mark Twain - Particularly with regards to the speeches and non-fiction he wrote.
  2. Tom Lehrer - Singer, comedian, sick and twisted, funny as hell. Was introduced to his music by…
  3. Dr. Demento - Influencing my sense of silliness for as long as I can remember.
  4. Dave Barry - I’ve been collecting his books for years and reading his column for as long as I can remember.
  5. Monty Python - Though in all honesty I’d have to list off all manner of British troupes if I want to be completely fair about it. The likes of Benny Hill, The Goodies, and other various British funny guys have had a big influence on my sense of humor.

So I cheated and squeezed a couple more in at the end there, but what are rules for if not to be broken?

So many to chose from, so I’ll go with early influences, from my impressionable days.

1. Eddie Murphy - first two standup albums - man, I never laughed so hard in my life as I did when I first heard them 20 years ago. I still can’t help grinning when I hear his old stuff.  “ICE CREAM!”

2. Robin Williams

3. Sam Kinison - yep, just what a rebellious teen needed to hear wink I remember watching the Letterman show where he got into the amatuer sex videotape bit with the “polar bear with a cold” then CBS dumped the rest of his act and you then see Dave walking off the set.

4. Steven Wright - love that deadpan delivery.

5. Bill Cosby

Richard Pryor would be in there, but at that time I didn’t have access to a lot of his standup stuff.

Oh no! I forgot my FAVORITE. Miss Manners!! Judith Martin is one hilarious broad....the zingers, the slow-builds, the flank attacks, the sugar coating. And of course she is perfect, every time. You can’t argue with Miss Manners. She’ll eat you alive.

She’s a guide for how to be a complete bitch and prevent anyone from ever being upset or questioning your propriety without looking like a dolt.

I’m hoping her next book is “101 Ways to Say “Shove it Up Your Ass”, a Compilation”.
