OK, that’s not exactly what he’s asking. What he’s actually asking is for folks to list off the five biggest influences on what it is that you find funny.
That shouldn’t be too hard I thought to myself, but then I realized that I’ve got quite a list I can think of off top of my head. Sol lists some ground rules of not using “real life” people such as your parents which wipes out my number one influence: my mother from who I feel I get a good chunk of my sense of humor. Instead, he wants to know what artists most influenced what you find funny. So here are my top 5 in no particular order:
- Mark Twain - Particularly with regards to the speeches and non-fiction he wrote.
- Tom Lehrer - Singer, comedian, sick and twisted, funny as hell. Was introduced to his music by…
- Dr. Demento - Influencing my sense of silliness for as long as I can remember.
- Dave Barry - I’ve been collecting his books for years and reading his column for as long as I can remember.
- Monty Python - Though in all honesty I’d have to list off all manner of British troupes if I want to be completely fair about it. The likes of Benny Hill, The Goodies, and other various British funny guys have had a big influence on my sense of humor.
So I cheated and squeezed a couple more in at the end there, but what are rules for if not to be broken?

1. South Park (the funniest damn TV show of all time)
2. Monty Python (bring me a shrubbery)
3. Firesign Theater
4. Sam Kinison
5. My twisted parents and years of snurfling milk out my nose at the supper table from laughing so hard.
