Shocker! One of the stars of “The Da Vinci Code” is an ATHEIST!

No wonder the Catholics are so upset about the Da Vinci Code movie, one of the guys who plays an Opus Dei member is an atheist!

The Da Vinci Code star Paul Bettany no longer follows Catholicism, despite being brought up a believer in the faith. Bettany, who plays a member of the secretive Catholic sect Opus Dei in director Ron Howard’s movie, admits he is now an “atheist.”

He says, “I was brought up Catholic. I’m lapsed. From the age of three I was with the nuns. Now I’m an atheist. I think religion does a lot for us but I can’t quite believe it, alas… It’s just a personal choice. I love the idea of heaven though. Who doesn’t? It’s lovely.”

Quick! Grab the women before they swoon! You just know someone’s going to use this as a scapegoat for why the movie is such a horrible affront to Jesus and the church. Of COURSE it’s full of LIES! It was made by ATHEISTS!!!

As UTI notes, the clip has scare-quotes,
as if “atheists” didn’t really exist. 
And the the most sinful bit, is what he “admits”,
for the shame it most surely connotes.

Of COURSE it’s full of LIES!

Yep.  Not so much lies, as total bollocks.  There was a programme on telly over here that pulled it apart much like we pull apart strange beliefs on this site.  The site of 3 DVC ‘fundies’, who had just had it patiently explained why the book was bollocks, holes, misquotes etc, then saying- ‘Well they would say that, it’s a conspiracy’. 

The Priory of Scion is a hoax by a couple of frenchmen from the 60’s.  Opus Dei on the other hand is trying to get people in positions of power, but only in the same way as, say, Halliburton.

The Catholics in my neck of the woods are hilarious. They blindly obey their priests and the Vatican when it comes to “The Da Vinci Code” and the “Harry Potter” series but they break ranks when it comes to the “Left Behind” series. Offical Catholic teachings are completely opposed to the fundie protestant bullshit in the “Left Behind” books but that doesn’t seem to stop the local Catholics from reading the series in between their Da Vinci Code lawsuit planning and Harry Potter book burning.

Paul Bettany no longer follows Catholicism

Sounds like a healthy fella.
I’ve seen this bloke in A Knight’s Tale and a couple of others, with Russell Crowe. He’s good.
I woulda thought his quirkiness (my perception) woulda been what the lead in the Da Vinci Code required.
But, the producers had to go in to battle with the safety on with Tom coz they had to maximise returns from the concept. Ah well, it’ll be one I pay to go see anyway. smile
