SEB is using a temporary template set.

You’ve probably noticed that the site has been unusually slow as of the last couple of days. I’ve had the hosting support folks looking into it on their end and it definitely appears my templates are the cause of the issue so I’ve changed SEB over to one of the default sets that comes with ExpressionEngine until I can sit down and redesign the templates from scratch to see if I can eliminate the problem.

So you folks will have to go without my smiling mug staring out at you for a few days, but at least the site is operational.

Didn’t you want to remodel anyway?

It’s about time you did something about it. The load times were getting painful.

Yeah, I’ve been meaning to remodel for some time now. Guess this will act as a big motivator.

I loved the look and format of it though so I hope you can keep at least some of it.

Honestly, I didn’t notice any problems with load times...but I load SEB along with a half dozen other websites immediately in tabs when I start Firefox.

The original layout was just fine, although I’ve always wondered if a fixed-width layout isn’t more readable. The present temporary layout is too narrow, by the way.

The trick is finding whatever plugins or bells and whistles in the templates drive SEB’s resource usage through the roof.

Just talking out of my ass, but this may be a good time to ask which features of the original template group are missed in this temporary one.

I myself can do without the monthly archives and category list in the sidebar - they can easily go into templates of their own. I do miss the list of most recent comments, though. In a nutshell, something like Drupal’s tracker from a few versions back would be really, really neat. If I could work up the energy to do one for my own sites, I’d gladly share the template.

The recent comments.  Don’t care about much of anything else.

Wow ... it’s very ...

Modern.  Or contemporary.  Or sterile.  Or generic.

On the other hand, there’s something to be said about occasionally moving into New Digs and starting from scratch.  (Been thinking of doing something similar.)

To be honest, there aren’t a lot of the Old Template features I made a lot of use of, FWIW.

Yeah, more often than not, it was the recent comments and entries with new comments. I didn’t use much of anything else. Between those and the ones I’m subscribed to, I’ve got an idea of the activity on SEB.

Yea, recent comments and country flags are cool.  The flow of the template was really nice to.  Everything was easy to find, text was very readable, colors were pleasing to the eye, And Les’ beard and smiling face was… well… I got used to that too. LOL

To be perfectly honest, I prefer dark text on light background (like this template) to the light text on a dark background.

I liked it pretty much the way it was, but load time never really bothered me, I use a 5meg cable service and it usually loaded just fine.

If I could make a suggestion - love the dark background and the light writing - makes it sooo much easier to read when you’ve had a few wink
And keep your head up there mate.

Hi Les - just a request on the new digs… make sure your guys don’t set you up with a template that uses DTDs...whatever they hell they are.

Apparently - from the scary note at the top of IE7’s rss feeder - “Feeds with DTDs are not supported” by the IE7 reader.

Tony

(Note: if someone can tell me what DTDs are and/or how to get IE7 to read them, you’d be my new best friend. Any ideas, ***Dave?)

DTD, as in Document Type Definition?

I doubt Les will change the RSS template, so if you’re fine now, you’ll continue to be.

Tony, I’m not changing the RSS feeds to those should still work the same.
