Scott McClellan quits. Bush defends Rumsfeld.

Looks like all that crack smoking has taken its toll as Scott McClellan is resigning:

Appearing with Bush on the South Lawn, McClellan, who has parried especially fiercely with reporters on Iraq and on intelligence issues, told Bush: “I have given it my all sir and I have given you my all sir, and I will continue to do so as we transition to a new press secretary.”

Bush said McClellan had “a challenging assignment.”

I bet. It must be tough sucking that much dick without getting your suit dirty.

In the same article we also find out that Karl Rove is giving up oversight of policy development:

Just over a year ago, Rove was promoted to deputy chief of staff in charge of most White House policy coordination. That new portfolio came on top of his title as senior adviser and role of chief policy aide to Bush.

But now, the job of deputy chief of staff for policy is being given to Joel Kaplan, the White House’s deputy budget director, said the official.

The move signals a possibly broad effort to rearrange and reinvigorate Bush’s staff by new chief of staff Joshua Bolten. Bolten moved into his position last week; Kaplan was his No. 2 person at the Office of Management and Budget.

At least for the time being, the promotion of Kaplan would leave Bush with three deputy chiefs of staff: Rove, Kaplan and Joe Hagin, who oversees administrative matters, intelligence and other national security issues.

Honestly, I’d be much happier if Rove were the one quitting and McClellan kept on with his lip service duties as out of the two of them McClellan was at least entertaining at times when he attempted to defend another idiotic Bush decision.

In a somewhat related news item Bush has stepped up to defend Rumsfeld. Probably because incompetence loves company:

“I listen to all voices, but mine is the final decision,” he said. “And Don Rumsfeld is doing a fine job. He’s not only transforming the military, he’s fighting a war on terror. He’s helping us fight a war on terror. I have strong confidence in Don Rumsfeld.

“I hear the voices, and I read the front page, and I know the speculation. But I’m the decider, and I decide what is best. And what’s best is for Don Rumsfeld to remain as the secretary of defense.”

What the fuck is this? Father Knows Best?

This is laughable mainly because it should be apparent to even the brain dead out there that Bush’s ability to judge how good a job someone in his administration is doing is, to put it as charitably as possible, “weak.” What was it he said in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina? Oh yeah: “Brownie, you’re doing a heckuva job.”

Mrs. SEB: Good Grief, how can anyone deny the human race is bent full throttle ahead towards mass destruction? We are plagued by a disease that is comprised of stupid, selfish, fucking people

And you tell me over and over and over again, my friend, how you don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction

I agree, Mrs. SEB. I very often envy non-human animals. Sometimes I think they are endowed with far more wisdom than we are.

No, Sadie, they are endowed with far less wisdom than we are.  However, their wisdom is, unlike ours, commensurate with their ability for mischief.

It was interesting viewing this stuff via the BBC and Sky News while was in the UK on business this week.

The take on the McClellan resignation was that it was a shame because the journalists all liked him.  (Actually, regardless of who’s in office, that has to be the most thankless and horrifically stressful job in Washington—powerless to affect policy, yet responsible for expressing it and defending it to a bunch of people who you may or may not get to be friendly with but who are always eager to see you trip up.)

The take on Rove was that it was simply to free his time up to focus on the ‘06 elections to keep the GOP control in Congress, without which Bush is in really major trouble.

As for defending Rumsfeld, Bush is noteworthy/notorious for being loyal (and expecting absolute loyalty in return), and he does have a point that *he* is in charge of his cabinet, not the pollsters or Congressfolk.

As a manic-depressive, Capricornian, pessimistic drunk I am constantly amazed at my idiotic optimism in a hopeful future for the human species.
Then again, maybe I’m crazy as well and, more outa touch with reality than I thought I was.
mmmm.raspberry
Mark Twain: The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter.
Jimmy Buffett: If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane.
Mark Twain: [Humanity] has unquestionably one really effective weapon - laughter (and, Hump day’s finger never goes astray). Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand.
This is the quote I was looking for. LOL

I’ve discovered that it all boils down to brain wiring: your brain is wired to worship magic or it isn’t, either it’s wired to utilize logic or it isn’t, either it’s analytical of myths or it isn’t.

Hey John- the way I look at it, we know so little about what the future holds in store for us, both optimism and pessimism are irrational; and while it’s moderately fun to be cynical and gripe (and get drunk LOL ), in the long run optimism is more rewardingd, and no less realistic than pessimism.  So I’m an optimistic pessimist too.

Here’s another quote for you:

“All cynicism masks a failure to cope"- John Fowles

I like it.
About 20 years ago I told my father he was cynical. grin
Quick as a flash he came back with, “What’s the opposite of cynical, Johnny Boy?”
“I dunno.”
Gullible.” LOL
He’s 88 now, still going strong (I hope I’m as ...), and likes to think of himself as a realist.

I was thinking about cynicism the other day when it occured to me:  what a hardcore cynic wants more than anything else is to be wrong.  A real cynic is an optimist who’s seen Murphy’s law in action too many times.

I’d say I have a cynical streak, but I’d be loath to ever describe myself as a cynic. Make of that what you will.

Indeed, leguru.  “If anything can go wrong, it will; and if something can’t go wrong, it will go wrong even so”.

The optimist’s answer- from Charles Alexandre de Calonne (1734–1802), appointed finance minister by Louis XVI in 1783: “si cʾest possible , cʾest fait; impossible? cela se fera"- if it is possible, it is done; the impossible? that will be done…

With no apparent segways the previous post reminded me of Peggy Lee’s immortal words: Is that all there is?
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~lady/snapshots/peggy-lee.html

Tomorrow is ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Day in Oz & NZ.
It’s a Celebration of our great loss (defeat) in Gallipoli, 1915.
Years later Atatürk (1881>1938), the father of modern Turkey and, the general in command of our defeat said: “Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives… you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets where they lie side by side here in this country of ours… You, the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. Having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well” … which always brings the beginning of a tear if I concentrate too much on what is written.
Anzac day is what we consider of our coming of age. I’ve read that Oz lost 60,000 lives in WW1 – per capita - more than any other country although I have read that NZ has similar claims.

At 10 am I’ll put on my best clothes, tie, jacket and medals, and join a march to remind the young, hopefully, there is NO glory in war boys and girls – there is only death at BEST and years of internal mental turmoil at worst.

At our RSL (Returned Serviceman’s League), at 6 pm seven days a week, there is a moment’s silence, with lights off, accompanied by a reading: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn --- at the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them --- lest we forget.
That also brings a tear.

I’d better fuck off before I become too maudlin thinking of that 22 year old boy I left behind.  downer
