President Bush: The Torture President.

It’s a slow day at work today so I’m getting caught up on my current events. Events such as the recent passage of an anti-torture bill by Congress which Bush promptly vetoed. Congress was unable to get the two-thirds majority needed for an override ensuring that while Bush likes to keep claiming that his administration doesn’t torture the fact remains that it has in the past and will continue to be able to do so in the future:

The Bush administration has opposed taking any interrogation options off the table, saying that to do so would rob U.S. investigators of important tools. In a statement after the vote, Press Secretary Dana Perino said, “The bill would have eliminated the legal alternative procedures in place in the CIA program to question the world’s most dangerous and violent terrorists.”

Water boarding isn’t legal. We tried, convicted, and executed several Japanese military people for doing it to our troops during WWII, what’s changed over the decades that makes it legal when America does it?

In his veto message Saturday, Bush said: “The fact that we have not been attacked over the past 6 1/2 years is not a matter of chance. It is the result of good policies and the determined efforts of individuals carrying them out.”

That may or may not be true, but it doesn’t provide a compelling argument that water boarding and other forms of torture are legal and should be available as interrogation techniques. There’s been no evidence outside of anecdotal claims by the Administration that any terrorists attacks have been thwarted thanks to the use of water boarding. It’s just another example of how Bush is perfectly happy to lie to your face and then keep on doing whatever the hell he wants to do. Just a shame there’s not enough politicians in Congress with the balls necessary to stand up to him.

Torture will happen whether we have a bill against it or not.  Legislation against it would simply cover politician’s arses’s -the same politicians that would tell people to “get the job done” with the underlying, unspoken understanding that their pawns should use whatever means necessary as long as they spare the politician the gory details.  Plausible deniability is the name of the game.

I don’t understand why people think credible information comes out of people that are willing to die and hate us with an amazing passion, from torturing and tormenting them. Why would they give any credible information?

Even so, is it worth it? Is hurting another human for possible information that might help worth it? How many more terrorists are created by the War and torture? It seems to me as if we are in a circular loop now that will never end. Bush has essentially fucked us by creating an endless stream of people that hate us and it will take years before we can attempt to say, we don’t hate you and we want to make things better, we want to help.

To the best of my knowledge, the most effective interrogators during WWII (on both sides) were those who treated their captives humanely.

For all the tortured rhetoric, it’s perfectly obvious to anybody but the self-deluded that the U.S. does indeed torture. Sooner or later, this will come back to haunt Americans. It further undercuts any claims to the moral high ground and serves as recruiting material for America’s enemies abroad. And not to forget what will predictably happen to future American captives, who can’t expect to be treated better than they’ve treated others. The problem with the “might makes right” principle is that might is not forever and there are two overriding principles: “the tables will turn” and “what’s good for the goose is good for the gander"…

Oh well. At least we’re so much safer now than we were six or seven years ago.
