Found this off of FARK.com and thought it was worth a post. I myself found it interesting because, well, I’m a sailor and now maybe Thailand is no longer a “no fly” zone. smile

A durable new drug that prevents HIV from entering human cells and causes almost no side effects has been developed by a team of researchers at Kumamoto University.

The new drug, code named AK602, was reported by the research team’s leader, Hiroaki Mitsuya, at the International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific in Kobe on Tuesday.

The drug’s main feature is that it shuts out the AIDS virus at the point when it tries to intrude into a human cell.

Current AIDS medicines can lose their effectiveness in a few days when the virus changes and develops a resistance to those drugs. But AK602 is different because it reacts to human cells instead of attacking the virus, Mitsuya said.

He said the drug sticks to a protein called CCR5 that acts as an entrance into human cells for the AIDS virus. When the new drug becomes attached to the protein, it can prevent HIV from entering, and thus stop the virus from spreading.

The researchers conducted clinical tests on 40 AIDS patients in the United States.

AK602 not only proved effective against viruses that had become resistant to other drugs, but it also caused almost no side effects, the team said.(IHT/Asahi: July 7,2005)

I’m going to stay skeptical. Until the med community releases peer review and testing results I won’t get my hopes up.

Still, if this plays out I say, “W00T!”

Must have been your account that got deleted, dean.l. Someone changed their email address to be which caused all of their notification emails to come to me so I did a database query and deleted whichever account had that email address and then banned that email address from being used.

If you don’t wish to receive notifications from SEB when new comments are posted to a thread you’ve commented on you can turn that function off by going into your member control panel and unchecking the option to automatically sign up for notifications. If you’re worried about your email address being harvested you should note that EE encodes all email addresses displayed by it via JavaScript to make that much more difficult.

I must be nothing but cynical anymore because I can’t imagine American drug companies allowing a cure. Drugs to treat the symptoms sure but not an out and out cure.

Amazing news though.

Paint me cynical then, too, Brock.  Not only would Big Pharma lose a hell of a lot of money on all those symptom-treating drugs, but a cure for AIDS would just create more homosexuals because there’d be nothing to be scared of anymore dontchaknow! rolleyes

I did some digging on the research, read all the abstracts I could find, but unfortunately it turns out I am too dimwitted to understand them.  It seemed that they had found a good vaccine for one “type” of AIDS.  Are there more than one type of AIDS?  And would this approach treat the other types?

I can’t recall how many strains of AIDS there are, but some are more drug resistant than others.

My question is what else is blocked from entering the cells?  That receptor is likely there for a reason…

As for the questions, well, to be honest most deal in misconceptions. This is not a drug which HIV can resist because each strain requires CCR5 to enter human cells. In point of fact, humans who are born without this particular protein are immune to AIDS and several other diseases. As far as drug companies blocking an effective treatment for AIDS, well, I would think that a few of you have seen Johhny Mnemonic a few too many times. There is no credible evidence that any drug company has EVER taken part in any similiar excercise. I for one am hopeful that the treatment may be approved and used and possibly the results submitted for peer review as soon as possible.
