Over the river…

Don’t know how much posting I’ll get in this weekend. We’re headed up to see my folks today in Otisville and we’ll be picking up the kid from her Aunt’s in Lake Orion on the way through. This year Easter was with my in-laws (we alternate back and forth every year) so this is our after-Easter visit with my folks. Mom has some really old picks of my great and great great grandfathers that she wants to scan into her computer and attempt to clean up so my image retouching skills will be put to the test later today. If they turn out halfway interesting then I’ll post them so you guys can check them out and be awed by people you don’t know. Not that I have a clue who they are myself.

Speaking of pics, I brought a bunch home from Mom’s awhile back including some of my biological father that I’ve scanned in with the intention of adding to the photo album here on the site. I should probably get around to doing that some day. If you’d like to see a picture of me and my siblings at a very young age then just hop on over to this entry on Momma’s Corner. I’ll be the blonde haired cutie on the right.

Now that I think of it, we’ve always been a family that was never shy about picture taking, but we’ve never been the type to pull out the albums and make friends sit around looking at them. My mother has thousands of pictures of people I know are related to me in some way, but don’t know anything about. One of these days I’m going to have to sit down and figure all of that out.

Sounds like a good excuse to spend a weekend with the folks and start writing on the backs of all those photos before the identities and circumstances are lost forever!

My mom has always been FANATICAL about writing on the backs of every picture we ever snapped.  She would say, “Just in case I come down with Alzheimer’s or something, so I’ll know who the hell these people are!”

Having somehow or another become the family genealogist, I’ve got to admit the old broad was right!  While I’ll never have to guess or search high and low to find out who’s in the pictures my mom has, some of the ones I’ve gotten from others in the family don’t even give the slightest clue as to the who, when, where, and it’s frustrating as hell.  There are some pictures where there’s a person that’s CLEARLY a member of the family, but no one remembers exactly who s/he might be - and chances are, anyone who might remember is long dead and buried.
