Gibson is apparently apologizing for his behavior:

“I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable,” the statement said. “I am deeply ashamed of everything I said.”
You know, I really can’t imagine how someone can say such vile things without believing them at least to SOME extent. I’m sure he’s just sorry that he was caught saying what he really DOES think.
Well, we got rid of all our Mel Gibson DVDs as soon as he heard he was a Holocaust denier, so there’s not much left to do.

Yeah, I agree - it goes right along with the old one about ‘many a true word is spoken in jest’.
Well, I’m a Gibson denier - I deny he was ever an Australian citizen. 
Isn’t alcohol something of a truth serum? People always say; “I didn’t mean it, I was drunk”. But alcohol lowers inhibitions. Never heard of it changing closely held opinions.
I just bought the Die Hard trilogy at a yard sale for $1 today! Great movies.
