All the cool kids do it and seeing as I’m at my parents today doing tech support stuff I figured I’d give it a shot as well. Use this thread to talk about whatever the hell you want to talk about. Use it as another opportunity to convert us heathens if you wish. Whatever. It’s the one of the few threads where no matter what your comment is about it can’t possibly be off-topic because the thread doesn’t have a topic. Which, of course, means it’ll probably end up picking one topic and sticking with it without fail…

Go nuts.

Who’s got an account at My Space?  Apparently the URLs associated with that site are blacklisted here at SEB, so let’s just share our usernames, which come after the blacklisted URL:

Mine is:  /rox1smf

Having had an account for a little while now, I can say this:  Only a fucking moron (or group of morons) would run a 50 million member site on Cold Fusion.  I haven’t been able to log in to my account at all today.

But ol’ Tom made a few million selling the site to Rupert Murdoch.  God damn you, Tom!!!

Well. Can’t pass up an open opportunity like this. How about shameless self-promoting comment spam?

BOCTAOE - But of course there are obvious exceptions

Oh, and get out and vote tomorrow Canada! How often do you get to choose between money laundering criminals or religious zealots as leaders of our country.

...well, every couple of years, I guess. Vote anyway.

Does anyone else worry that the new Cyberman in Doctor Who looks a little too robotic? Though I guess we’ll have to wait till the episode in which they appear to really see how they’re played.

Oh, and broadband is too bloody expensive here in rural Australia, damn you Telstra!

I’ll second the vote motion… I don’t really care you who vote for because it;’s sorta like choosing between the Godfather and Scarface.

One sure and primary and fundamental fact is the joint existence of a subject and of its world. The one does not exist without the other. I acquire no understanding of myself except as I take account of objects, of the surroundings. I do not think unless I think of things — and there I find myself. - Bruce Lee

It’s too bloody expensive and too fucking slow here in Auckland, NZ, in the CITY too, so you’re not alone.

Yes, Brooks, I did get it. Thank you very much for the DVD of Kung-Fu Hustle. I meant to send you an email thank you about it as it arrived very late (just last week) and it looked like it’d been through hell as the packaging was ripped to shreds, but the DVD itself was OK and I’ve already watched it once to be sure. I think you may have gummed up one of the U.S. Post Office’s sorting machines with it, but that just makes it that much more special of a present.

OB, I haven’t intentionally blacklisted myspace sites so I’ll check into that. I’m considering running an experiment where I turn off the blacklist and the referrer tracking to see if it speeds SEB up a bit. I’ve turned trackbacks back off again seeing as 99% of all of them are spam and I’ve already shut down the referrer tracking, but haven’t disabled the blacklist just yet.

How goes the comfy chair search?
What’s Melvin up to, now that he has to share kittycat space?

Les United States Posted on 01/23/2006 at 11:41 AM

Les pic

The search for a comfy chair has shifted into high gear as my old chair just died over the weekend. The base collapsed making it impossible to sit in. Now I have no choice but to find a new chair soon.

Melvin seems to be doing pretty well, though he gets into the occasional fight with Midnight, the other black cat in the house and the Alpha male before Melvin moved in. Mostly minor hissing fits at each other, but Melvin did get blindsided last week badly enough that I was picking bits of Midnight’s claws from his fur. Ouchies. All things considered, though, he’s doing well. He and I took a nap together on the couch the other day. I think Anne has pictures of it. I’ll post them later tonight when I get home.

Cool Les. I’m glad it got there. I was beginning to wonder.

One of my strongest memories of New Zealand was my constant struggle to NOT tip. Well, that and my helicopter ride to, and jump off of, the bridge at Skippers Canyon.

Incidentally Brooks, if I ever manage to make it to your neck of the woods (or vice versa) I’ll probably ask you how much it’d cost to have you take a photo or two of my ugly mug. I’m always envious when I stop by your blog.

Groovy! An open thread!

I really should quit smoking. It’d add years to my life, but dammit, it’s so hard! Plus, you only live once…

You can relax...first, hypnosis works
really well to quit smoking (if you
actually want to quit).

Also, if you die from lung cancer
no big deal ‘cause you don’t live
just once. Go ahead and blow this
life on nicotine if you like - you
can always re-up for another life.

Ever tried hypnotic pre-natal regression?

I just spend the last half hour reading the old thread about the 14 yr old kid and his 42 yr old wife. How did I miss that one. Hilarious! People who can’t spell always make the funniest comments.

[sarcasm] Nope, I’ve been too busy with my attempts at hypnotic pre-zygotic regression. This isn’t working, though, so maybe I should give your method a whirl. [/sarcasm]

Just a heads up to anyone interested, the creationists nemesis Richard Dawkins (Darwins Rottweiler)has screened a two part documentary Roots of Evil.

Some interesting interviews,I was particularly struck by one man claiming execution for adultery was sanctiomed in the bible and therefore was acceptable, not some mad Mullah but an American Pastor.
Keep it zipped.

Ingolfson- you mean they actually have cities in New Zealand, with electricity and everything?

Sure. The New Zealanders don’t like it, but the common JAFA (Just Another Fuck… aeh… Friendly Aucklander) still exists.

And sprawls over an area the size of London, with ‘only’ a third of the population. It’s one of the fastest growing cities of the western world though, and some day they (we) will actually build two-story houses in the suburbs.

As for electricity - nope, they had blackouts before, and will have them again, because of said growth and those pesky envrionmentalists protesting any new power plants or power lines wink

You ever been to NZ, Zilch? Oh, how I miss European food… Apart from that, its lovely.

ingolfson New Zealand (Aotearoa) Posted on 01/24/2006 at 12:27 AM

And on a sourer note, this sticks up my craw just now. Not in a making me furious and burn US flags way, but it does make me angry.

I’m not one for revenge, but shouldn’t someone who killed a prisoner during tor… aeh… interrogation get a harsher sentence?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060124/ap_on_re_us/iraq_suffocation

I know the guys ultimately responsible are much higher up, and if they ever visit prisons, its for publicity stuff. But the fact that those guys should be balmed (and we often enough do so here on this site) should not mean that those under them escape too. Otherwise, NO ONE is ever being blamed, you know?

zilch Austria Posted on 01/24/2006 at 03:09 AM

Ingolfson- nope, never been in that part of the world.  Hope to someday- I’ll let you know.  I have a couple of friends in Christchurch, and in Hobart, and Auckland is probably on the same streetcar line.

Speaking of visits- I’m going to be in the SF Bay Area (in El Cerrito to be exact) for a month starting this Thursday, and I would love to get together with any SEB’ers who are around, if for no other reason than to see with my own eyes that not all of you are Turing machines.  Of course, ruling out androids will be harder… Please, drop me an email.  Cheers, zilch
