The folks who bring us Drupal aren’t ignoring the sudden interest by many bloggers to switch to something other than MovableType for their blogging purposes. In fact, they’ve put together a small article on why folks might want to consider making Drupal their next package.

Why move from MT to Drupal? | drupal.org

For those people wanting more, Drupal has a lot to offer than might be seen at first glance. It’s not without reason that Drupal has the nickname of “community plumbing” and is often described as innovative and unique. Take a careful look at the standard Drupal features and contributed modules (’plugins’ in MT parlance), understand where Drupal will be by the 4.5 release in just a few months, project the feature rich environment that could be within the next year, and realize that Drupal will continue to grow in new and interesting ways, making it one of the best choices for those interested in blogging as social software.

The article goes on to talk about Drupal’s use of a distributed, as opposed to centralized, authentication system, their new committment to improving the MT-to-Drupal conversion process and improving the ease of use of the Install Wizard and Site Profiles. AS well as a couple of projects folks have started to make Drupal a little more MT-like in some respects. It’s a short, but worthwhile read for folks thinking they might want something that’s both Open Source and has some hefty features to it.

But what do you *think* of it Les?

I transferred to MT a couple of months ago and so far it’s been a pain in the arse.

Drupal is already pre-installed on my server.  I’ll think I’ll have a little play around with it.

What do I think of Drupal? I have a love/hate relationship going with it right now. It’s a a bit of a pain in some respects, but it has a lot of power and a lot of what I want in a blogging package. I also think it has a lot of potential. I’m still leaning toward using it to run SEB.
