Now the job hunt begins in earnest.

My office phone rang as I was wrapping my scarf around my neck to head home at 4PM today. It was my representative from the contract house I work for. He asked me what time I get off of work and when I said I was just about to leave he asked if I could swing by his office, but wouldn’t say much when I asked what was up. This naturally set off my spider senses and I knew before I ever made the five minute drive what I was in store for. As I walked in his office it only took a glance at his expression to confirm my suspicions. My contract was being terminated.

My supervisor had called him that afternoon and wanted him to make it clear to me that it wasn’t due to any failing of my own. It wasn’t a job performance issue or a lack of professionalism; if anything I had done an excellent job in my four years working there even after they moved me into a position they knew I wasn’t happy with. Apparently the reason I was being let go was because they had gotten authorization for a direct hire, but they had to give up an agency (contractor) in order to do so. My supervisor would have liked to have offered to convert me from agency to an employee, but my lack of a college degree apparently put me beyond consideration and so they were ending my contract. The good news, if you can call it that, is that I have a little under a month to find a new job. My last day will be Friday, February 11th. This too, I was told, was representative of my professionalism as normally they lay folks off the same day they make the decision.

It was a somber drive home and I’d be lying if I didn’t say my stomach isn’t in knots at the moment, but I’ll put in my remaining time and start passing out resumes like complimentary breath mints. I’d intended to find a new job this year anyway, but I was hoping to do it on my own timetable. Still, a month’s notice beats a day’s notice and I’ll try to be happy about that much.

So if any of you hear of any good opportunities in the South Eastern Michigan area, or happen to be talent scouts from Hollywood who were considering taking me up on the offer to make me famous from the last time I talked about my job, now’s the time to let me know about it. Wish me luck, I have a feeling I’m going to need it.

Sigh, I feel for you man.  Been there before.  The life of a contractor has its plusses and minuses; this being the #1 minus.  Hang in there, Im sure you’ll land something bigger and better anyway.  Good things happen to good people.  Even bastards!

Good luck, Les!  Hopefully you will find the a better job that satisfies your needs.

That sucks man. Like Grokster said though, you’ll find something. You are obviously intelligent and capable (this is fast becoming one of my favourite websites), besides you may even find a job you like.

It seems weak for me to say, but I really hope you can find what you want - and soon.

(Can’t say I understand their logic, though.  They liked your work, got authorization to hire someone permanent for your job, but can’t hire you. What a bunch of idiots.)

I know what’s going to happen when I get home.  MrsDOF is going to say, “Les got a pink slip!!!”

Rrg.  I agree—it’s goofy that they like everything about you except for some theoretical requirement for a college degree.  (Which is why all the positions *I* post include “or equivalent experience").

I’m a big believer in college, esp. a liberal arts education, but insisting on it when it’s demonstrably unnecessary is just stupid.

Rrg.

Here’s confidently looking forward to a swift post about your faboo new position ...

Sorry to hear that Les.
Take it as a challenge. Tomorrow morning, the challenge of the year starts for you. There’s a lot to win.
Stay positive....And charge.

I feel your pain Les. I’ve been contracting for nearly a year now and it’s definitely not something I’m enjoying. Seems odd that they were able to keep you on a contract for so long. Here’s to hoping your new gig treats you better.

Les,

Good luck with the job hunt, have you ever considered a career change.  I think you would make a fine journalist.

It’s complete insanity that they’d need you to have a college degree before hiring you as an employee, they know you’re a good worker, they want to hire you, what difference is a piece of paper going to make.

I can understand not hiring someone new because their educational qualifications aren’t up to what you consider appropriate for the job, but someone you’ve been working with for four years?

It’s insane, truly insane.

At least a smart dude like you isn’t likely to be out of work for very long. Good luck.

Have you looked at federal employment? IT is big and the pay is good. I don’t know how many jobs are in your area but have a look at “usajobs”

Federal employment always has a “degree or experience” clause.

I’m sure I’ve prolly seen this before but what is your experience in?  If you were willing to move I might be able to find suggestions for places to apply, but they wouldn’t be in Michigan.  It prolly means nothing to you, but my prayers are with you.

Man that sucks… That happened to me just under 2 years ago. Took 8 months to find something else, but I did find something else. My cousin just lost his job last week too.

Good luck man!

Wow Les, that truly does suck. I can’t believe the degree issue...sheer insanity.

I would think that at a certain point in one’s life/career (you’re late 30s, right?), that sort of thing wouldn’t matter anymore. Especially in your field, what you may have learned pursuing a degree is probably useless in practical application at this point.

Ridiculous.

I think you should buy a degree online...and become a minister while you’re at it. Maybe a 2-for-1 special.

But I really have no doubt that you’ll land a bigger, better job very quickly. Their loss, right?

I’ll say a prayer for you Les, The degree thing is overrated, but you know about the “romantic” allure attached to these titles such as a degree....blah,blah,blah has a degree in blah, blah, blah so damnit they must be smart. Yeh Right.

I’m sure that you will transition to bigger and better things.  The in between sucks though.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I don’t know you well enough yet Les but you seem like the type that’ll land on your feet.  Good luck.  I do kind of like that Hollywood idea for you though.  There may be something in that.  smile

Good luck, Les.  Pursue all your wild and crazy ideas- you never know what might work out.  My brother the high school dropout has a great job- it is possible to find or create a niche for yourself.  You obviously have the talent, intelligence, and self-confidence- all you need is a bit of luck.

I was wondering whether is this a true conflict with the company. The situation may not be all that irreconcilable.

Perhaps you could attempt to negotiate with the company to give you the job in return, you would attend college.

Thus you could ask them to hire you and put you on “probation” (for lack of better word) for 3-4 years during this time you work for your degree.

To address the concern that you may not be on track, you could include your results as a condition of continued employment.

And perhaps you could improve on the negotiation by promising to obtain not just a college degree but a masters too within a fix period.

Oh by the way, do check out this month (Jan) issue of Fortune magazine for its report of 100 best companues to work for in the US.

Some allow people to spend up to 25% of their workday pursuing tech ideas outside their job scope, to others paying 100% of tuition up to $20,000 for employee’s children or grandchildren college education, or flying in a professor every week so employee can earn a masters or take college classes on site, or paying up to $6000 for employee’s collge tuition per year.

There are 5 firms HQ in Michigan although obviously the rest do have operations across the US since the cut off for small firm category is 1000 employees.

- Bronson Healthcare Grp (Kalamazoo, Mich)
Average $ = $73,881
- Republic Bancorp (Owosso, Mich)
Avg $ = $165,000
- Quicken Loans (Livornia, Mich)

Hell, why not Hollywood? You do have television experience after all.

Even if you were probably too polite.
