That’s a christian-based quiz. They believe Athiests don’t appreciate human life. It’s quite the opposite. As an Athiest, I wont kill unless it’s absolutely necessary for my, and “mine’s”, survival. A christian will kill first and “let god sort them out”.

It’s not a genetic defect, it’s a way of thinking. My parents were not Nazis, I learned of them in school (At least somebody got useful info out of all that WW2 crap they teach) and took a liking to them. Than again, I’ve always rooted for the “evil villains”. 

It’s not a genetic defect, it’s a way of thinking.

But a way of thinking can be a genetic defect too, if it is inborn and outdated: for instance, fear and dislike of strangers is almost certainly genetic, and served us well in our tribal past, but is increasingly dangerous in our modern world filled with well-armed strangers.  Diplomacy is hard to learn but necessary for survival nowadays.

Yes, we’re familiar with the Bible, Mr/Mrs “Praying 4u,” and it makes for an unconvincing argument. You keep praying, though. You’re joining a long line of people who have been praying for me for decades.

What’s to reconsider, Praying 4u?  Most of us atheists here know the Bible pretty well, and that’s part of the reason we’re atheists.  The Bible is a marvelous hodgepodge of history (accurate and inaccurate), fairy tales, and advice both good and bad- in other words, great literature.  But the word of God?  Nah.

And using quotes from the Bible to threaten us, or to convince us of the truth of the Bible, is less than impressive.  Anyone can write a book that says “This is true, because God says so.  Believe it- or else.” So what?

Yes, well, I admit that using the Bible itself to prove it’s validity is circular logic. I also agree with your statement that anyone can write a book that says anything.
However, have you ever considered these meta-themes in the Bible? I present them for your consideration, with no desire to threaten anyone. Peace

And yet, they all wrote of one theme, the topic of Jesus Christ and the payment for sin that He
provided. There is agreement on this from the beginning of Genesis to the closing words of

Possibly the best quote ever. Now I’m in the mood to get out my Rush CD’s (I’m a huge fan).

And yet, they all wrote of one theme, the topic of Jesus Christ and the payment for sin that He provided. There is agreement on this from the beginning of Genesis to the closing words of Revelation.

Praying 4u, there are of course several different ways this could be debated from a Scriptural standpoint- for instance, Jews will not agree that Jesus is a theme in the Old Testament, and while Muslims and Bahá’ís will agree that Jesus is a Prophet of God, they will go on to claim that their own prophets supercede Jesus, as Christians believe Jesus supercedes Moses.

But for a rationalist, all these themes and claims within religious texts, while interesting, don’t prove anything about the real world.  Let’s suppose there were forty authors who wrote about Jesus over a period of 1500 years.  So what?  God knows how many authors have written about the flatness of the Earth over thousands of years.  Just because a bunch of people have the same belief doesn’t make it true.

Of course, this doesn’t prove the Bible to be false, either.  But there are enough internal inconsistencies, scientific inaccuracies, and just plain nastiness in the Bible to show that it is either not the Word of God, or if it is, that God is a twisted mindfucker.

I’m not sure how the fact that Jesus is a theme in the Bible, or at least the New Testament, is supposed to be all that amazing. You make it sound like it’s difficult for multiple authors to write fiction that contains the same theme throughout the collections over a great period of time.

I have a very lengthy collection of Doctor Who novels that are written by a whole host of different authors over the years, way more than 40 different people in the time they’ve been around, and yet they all manage to stay pretty consistent in the theme of telling the story of wandering Time Lord. The rate of inconsistencies and contradictions present in that series of books is probably lower than the ones found in the Bible.

I’m willing to bet it wouldn’t be too hard for someone halfway decent at writing to come up with a new Gospel today that would seem consistent with what’s been written previously and have more than a few people buy into it. Just look at the Mormons for crying out loud.

What consistancy? There is very little in the New Fables that even agrees at all. They don’t agree on the date of the supposed execution, the charges, who was there, or what was said. Move the the “ressurection” and it gets worse. What is interesting is if you graph the dates of the authors writings versus the “miracles”. The grow with the telling.

Interestingly, there is no exo-biblical evidence agreeing with the bible’s account or anything even close. I will just wait in reserve until I hear “those primitive times and things weren’t documented like they are today.” That’s a lie, but will save a page of writing until I see it.
