MSNBC anchor Mika Brzezinski refuses to read Paris Hilton news story.

With all the news networks short-stroking everything Paris related over the last couple of days — CNN actually covered Paris showing up at CNN to be on Larry King — it’s very refreshing to see that at least one journalist out there tried very hard not to lead with a story on Paris’ release from prison:

I still don’t understand why so many people give a flying fuck about Paris Hilton or what stupid thing she’s done lately. I certainly don’t understand why so many news agencies treat it as the most important story of the day when there’s so many other much more newsworthy things to be covering out there. She’s rich and she’s spoiled and the media can’t seem to let a day go by without lavishing attention on her as though her every move were of cosmic significance. I don’t begrudge her her money, I’d like to be rich myself, but I do begrudge her attention whoring as though anything she does has any real importance to anyone outside of herself.

The only time I’d care about PH is if she showed up at my home to give me a blow job.

If they’re not all acting. Paris to reinvent her imgage they to improve ratings.

Fake or not though, msnbc may have contributed to a bit of sanity

Poor producer however. He came across as a junior brat, and Mika as a whining bitch.

Even if she had the best role.

Why is PH newsworthy?

1) Easily digested: rich, spoiled, attractive, bad- someone most Americans can get behind.

2) Undemanding: no complicated science stuff, no numbers to process.

3) No agenbite of inwit: no personal involvement with inconvenient truths that might be squirmworthy.

All in all, the perfect bit of infotainment, leaving the viewer titillated, unchallenged, and self-righteous.  What more could anyone want?

The metastory of why people pay attention to her is newsworthy, however.  As Zilch said, she’s a distraction from anything squirmworthy.  It’s been nonstop PH on Faux News, “the white-chicks-doing-stuff channel”, along with a pregnant woman who was murdered somewhere, a college student who disappeared in Trinidad or someplace, a college student who was ( shocking! ) murdered in Central Park, and on, and on, and on.

Usually one of those stories runs about a month, several mentions per program, several programs per day as if it were the most important thing in the world.  Generally it is presented as a clear sign that secular morality is destroying our civilization.

(The African-American student who was abducted from our town and found murdered two states away, however, was not mentioned even once on that network, however.)

Al Gore goes into this phenomenon in some depth in his new book, “The Assault On Reason”.

But Paris Hilton is probably a genius with technology.  She even figured out how to share her phone messages with the rest of us.

I do not find Paris Hilton attractive.  She looks like an inbred cabbage patch kid.  As much as I am annoyed by the attention she gets, I have to admit I do have a favorite picture of her.  No, not the beaver shot, but the later photographic masterpiece of her crying like a little bitch in the back of a cop car.  Makes me laugh every time.

Maybe she’ll get drunk and run over somebody, and the warden will allow Fox or CNN to place a camera in her cell.  Now that might be reality t.v. worth watching!

The more disturbing piece is that Paris bumped Michael Moore to be on Larry King. Spoined rich brat more important than healthcare?

If you were Larry King - fat guy or rich blonde with a porn video?

She’s certain the safer choice too, else if Larry agreed with anything Moore said (Nice weather? Sure Is!) he’d instantly be labeled as part of the Evil Liberal Media some more.

I don’t like Michael Moore, but at least he is news. As much as I disagree with most of his propaganda, at least he has a talking point. Part of his problem is he gives government WAY to much credit when it comes being able to deal with anything, but at least you can have an intelligent conversation with him.

Timmeh, I agree - government intervention should be propped only when it alleviates an undesirable symptom - and a minimum wage, or a minimum level of health-care, those things I tend to press. I like a good minimum quality of life (that may be just me). But in general, the free market does a good job of distributing resources (fairly, if harshly).

I like what Moore is trying to do, and any nation should be proud to have such a passionate activist as a citizen. His methods, of course, are give-and-take.

Patness: and any nation should be proud to have such a passionate activist as a citizen

Pride & passion are often assumed to be good things but I wonder - because passion can distort perspective and pride can be binding. I do agree with the need for a decent minimum wage, and I think it also stops risk of deflation if held firmly (as a maximum would control inflation). I also agree that the free market is automatically compelled to keep most it’s workforce alive and motivated enough

Moore is just as much if not more of an attention whore than Hilton.

Of course this statement floored me:

..government intervention should be propped only when it alleviates an undesirable symptom

You mean like I have to work to put money in my pocket and get health-care?  That undesirable fact of life?
