More people blind themselves looking for Jesus’ mom in the Sun.

Is there something about being Catholic that makes people of that particular Christian denomination more stupid gullible than the Protestants? There must be because we keep getting news items like this one:

Indians blinded looking for vision of Mary - UPI.com

KOTTAYAM, India, March 11 (UPI)—Reports in India of a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary in the sky have led about 50 people to blind themselves by staring at the sun.

The visions are said to appear over the former home of a hotel owner in the Kottayam area in southeast India, The Daily Telegraph reported. One hospital in the district reported 48 patients had been admitted with burned retinas since last week, the British newspaper reported.

Churches have warned their congregations that looking at the sun will cause permanent blindness and have told them the supposed miracle is not one.

Before moving out, the hotel owner reportedly had also claimed to have statues of the Virgin Mary that cried honey and bled oils and perfumes.

If you can’t believe a hotel owner’s claims of miraculous honey-crying statues well then who can you believe? I mean there’s no way in hell they’d make ridiculous claims like that for fame or money, right?

I don’t know, I always considered Catholics to be intolerant, bigoted and medievel but not as batshit insane as the Baptists. I may be biased as I used to be and most of my maternal family still are Catholics (and Indian Catholics obviously).

I even went to a Catholic school where they told us that Genesis is obviously metaphorical because it is contradicted by evolution. And we were told this in religious studies, not biology. So I wouldn’t really agree with what you said.

Sure there are a lot of incidences like this but on the whole I don’t think they’re that bad.

I’ve seen the kind of people that think they’re going to heaven…
And if they’re going to be there…
I want nothing to do with it.

Brlindness is serios business, folks.

But seriously, I spent 7 years living in Oklahoma (growing up in Colorado so I’m VERY familiar with Colorado Springs style uber-evangelical christianity) and I have to tell you, nothing is funnier than going to a church service with a co-worker and being neck-deep in REALLY white people (think pastel polo, khakis, and loafers) gyrating out-of-tempo with the in-house pseudo-rock band whilst waving their (again, REALLY white) outstretched arms in a pitiful salute to the black southern baptist tradition.

Kill your TV, go to random evangelical services for authentic, and righteous, entertainment.

Oh, and tear up your lawn and grown your own food, too...that’s true homeland security.

Looks like I spoke too soon. The Vatican morons have recently updated the list of what used to be the 7 deadly sins to add stuff like disrespecting enbryos and conducting morally debatable scientific experiments.

These people obviously wanted to believe the miraculous. Obviously the leaders of the Church told them that they were misguided. Responding to the above, I think it is respectable that the Church dialogs with the modern world such as by taking interest in bioethics. I think it is more irrational for a Christian to say it is wrong to murder but say that killing embryos is okay. You have to respect the Church for being consistent, a human being is a human being at the moment it begins to metabolize and has 46 chromosomes. There is nothing else that it is. Also, it is true that the Church is not creationist but does acknowledge the validity of evolution.
