Tie a few of these babies to your bumper and you can probably get away with driving as fast as you want on the highway. People will get the hell out of your way too!

Shamelessly “borrowed” from Engadget.

The first thing that came into my mind was getting a set of these and sneaking up to tie them on a gasoline tanker getting ready to pull out on to the highway.

I would imagine that I would spend an enjoyable day with our Homeland Security friends.

I saw those earlier today. It just looks like a bad idea. Sure, they are cool and funny. I can just see the problems if you drove into an airport with them on. Could be quite a problem.

I WANT one, but will anyone believe that a missile was fired at a 1989 Honda Civic Si that already sports structural bungee cords? Oh, the comedy.

Awhile ago, i read a book called Nature’s End:
http://www.nafcon.dircon.co.uk/books_natures_end.html

Although poorly written, it had some interesting ideas.  At one point an individual was speeding along, well-exceeding the limit of the road.  The vehicle, armed with an connected computer, promptly issued the citizen a citation and notified the central police station of the infraction.

In Europe there’s widespread use of speed-cameras, too.  Occassionaly, the local rag shows a photo of this or that speedster, cleverly disguising his license plate and wearing a schwein mask as well.

If you pass one of these cameras, and are speeding, they send the ticket in the mail, accompanied by a photo of your vehicle (and face) with the measured speed superimposed.  (Someone once, in reply to the photo-ticket, sent a picture of a check in reply—only to recieve a picture of a jail cell from the local polizei).

Speeding, along with public anonymity, shall soon be a thing of the past, something we’ll tell our children about:  “When we were kids you could drink-n-drive, speed, etc., unless you were actually caught by a human cop.”

Over here (in Europe but vaguely determined to NOT be in Europe), the speed cameras take a photo of you going by. They don’t get your face, but they do get your number plate. And yes, they do send you the photo, complete with the camera’s reading of your speed and the time.

Interestingly, the British tabloids are full of speed camera fun at the moment. Popular opinion seems to indicate that the police might be better served catching real criminals instead of hiding cameras in new and interesting locations to catch people going maybe five miles an hour over the speed limit.

Car-mounted missiles would, I feel, give this rather lame debate a whole new dimension. Anybody exporting?

I agree.  We’ve already had vehicular homicide cases in the US where the on-board computer was admitted as evidence to show what took place before the accident.  Maybe the next step will be an on-board switch that slows the car down when ever a cop hits you with his laser gun ensuring you won’t try and run.

I’ll build you one for your next birthday.  I imagine that it could be done with styrofoam tubing and a balloon bladder.

BTW:  That was a shameless plug to say Happy Birthday to StinkAss yet again, 26 yrs I believe.

Wow- Like a Golden Age Warner Bro.s cartoon come to life!

The Coyote would be proud.  So, where do they sell ‘em??

Les United States Posted on 09/10/2004 at 11:44 AM

I have no idea where or even if they do sell them. The article I borrowed it from didn’t say either. I just thought it was a funny picture.

Maybe the next step will be an on-board switch that slows the car down when ever a cop hits you with his laser gun ensuring you won’t try and run

It’s already here, or at least, in the works.

To protect newer cars from theft, some of them are coming equipped - built into the governor - a device that will slow the car down to 35 mph or slower if hit with a special laser gun.  GM’s also got this built into the *On-Star* feature, where they can shut off your car if it’s been stolen (and with the GPS - tell you where it is).

The *On-Star* stuff really scares me… Now it will automatically call for help if you hit something.  What if I don’t want anyone to know who (...er, I mean, what) I hit?

What they need to do is make the cars so they automatically slow down when you’re running through an area that’s being checked, and then resume your preferred speed once you’re past the scanners.  I’d buy any car that will do that for me.
