One of them being me moving to Mexico.

The fallout will make for a lot of very interesting sociological studies over the next few decades.

Looks like I’ll be buying tickets for Cancun so that I can, ummm…hang out at the beach. That’s it, the beach!

I listened to an NPR article this afternoon on the genesis of this.  Evidently judges in Mexico have been ruling that addicts cannot be punished for having a personal stash, and dealers have thus been claiming that the 40 kilos of heroin (etc.) are all personal stashes that they, as addicts, happen to be carrying in their brief cases.  The law (this aspect of it) sets what a “personal stash” can be considered, more than which the person is presumed to be a dealer (there are parallels, albeit more draconian, in US drug law).

The law also gives drug enforcement privs to state and local law enforcement, rather than just to the federales.

That all said—yeah, bringing a little sanity to US drug laws would be a fine thing.

Yeah the more I read up on this the clearer it became that this wasn’t going to be tantamount to a Big Party Time in Mexico after all. The selling of drugs is still a crime and all this law really does is set things up so that their legal system is focused on the producers and sellers and not on the junkies.

Which just makes the reaction by some folks in Washington all the more stupid.

Are there any countries where you can smoke marijuana legally?  They’re all smoking holes in the ground because of the wrath of Dog by now, right?

As far as I know it’s still legal in Holland, DoF, at least in the bars.  It’s an outrage that tobacco and alcohol are legal most places, and marijuana illegal.

Everyone must be just smoking grass all the time.  How does the mail get delivered there?  Isn’t there garbage all over the streets, because no one picks it up?  It must be terribly dangerous to walk through the downtown area with all the pot fiends everywhere.  Probably a sky-high STD and pregnancy rate too because of all the irrational behavior.  Restaurants filthy, inspectors high… Dog, what a hell-hole.

Its effectively legal in Germany.

I’ll add Austria to the places where it’s “effectively” legal.  Strictly speaking, it’s illegal; but you can legally buy baby marijuana plants here (before they have any thc content).  You can’t legally let them grow up, but it’s pretty hard to control this.  You can also legally buy fresh mushrooms of various kinds: dried ones are illegal, though, ‘cause they’re “drugs”.

These laws are all subject to the winds of politics, however, and they might become stricter again, depending on who’s in power.

Mail is somehow delivered fairly regularly here.  It’s actually the post office in the States that’s more of a problem.  I had never believed my friends that you have to add “Europe” after “Austria” on anything you send here from the US, until I got a package after six months, with stamps saying that it came here via Sydney, Australia.  Now I write “Europe” in big letters.
