MC Hawking

My boyfriend Sean recently turned me into a big fan of MC Hawking, a fictional rap group that pays tribute to genius Steven Hawking and all things scientific.  The music is a hilarious combination of old school hip hop beats and a synthetic/computerized voice (reminiscent of the voice computer Hawking uses) spewing out witty pro-science lyrics.  Ken Leavitt-Lawrence made an animated music video for one of the songs on MC Hawking’s latests album “A Brief History of Rhyme”, called “What we need more of is science”.  The video is pretty funny, as are the lyrics.  I find the “Fuck the Creationist” song the best by far, however.  Warning for vulgar language and possible offensive content! Some choice rhymes include:

Fuck the damn creationists, those bunch of dumb-ass bitches,
every time I think of them my trigger finger itches.
They want to have their bullshit, taught in public class,
Stephen J. Gould should put his foot right up their ass.

And:

The cosmos is expanding every second, every day,
but their minds are shrinking as they close their eyes and pray.
They call their bullshit science like the word could give them cred,
if them bitches be scientists then cap me in the head.

If you like the video, I urge you to buy an MC Hawking CD (or two or three)!  At the very least, check out the website grin

I like their concept and mission even if I’m not a fan of typical rap music.

Music’s supposed to have singing in when it contains words. I may be an embarrassment to my friends because of my backward opinion but I’ll be glad when the rap craze goes away.

Still, I respect that they’re doing something intelligent with the art form.

Yeah, I can’t say that I’ve ever been a big fan of rap, either, but I find this particularly enjoyable because...well, to me at least there’s just something so funny about the juxtaposition of Stephen hawking and his monoton voice, and obscenity-laced rhymes in support of education and science, and also “dissing” those opposed to it.

Note:  I understand that Prof. Hawking did not create the music, nor has he given it an official endorsement AFAIK.

He seems like a pretty funny guy.  Given his humorous appearances on The Simpsons and Star Trek TNG, I imagine Hawking enjoys stuff like the article; Hawking builds robotic exoskeleton.

This is hysterical!
I wonder though, why the venon at new agers? Seems like fundamentalist Christians are way more deserving of a boot to their hateful, hypocritical heads.

Just asking.....

Very very funny stuff!

You guys haven’t listened to Public Enemy or the Beastie Boys-----there’s some awesome rap out there if you look for it and quit watching MTV and the flavor of the day.

I’m not a rap fan, either.  I have nothing against the form- in some ways it harks back to the ancient exchange of formalized disquisitions known as flyting.  But most of the texts are pretty juvenile.

MC Hawking seems to be an exception.  I like this peroration on the misuse of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, for instance:

Creationists always try to use the second law,
to disprove evolution, but their theory has a flaw.
The second law is quite precise about where it applies,
only in a closed system must the entropy count rise.
The earth’s not a closed system it’s powered by the sun,
so f$&# the damn creationists, Doomsday get my gun!p

I found it hilarious, too, and I had to watch it twice; once to see the animation and once to focus on the audio.  These guys did a great job, and like Brock I can’t help but respect and support them for their creativity and their mission.

Yeah, I find that I’m more a fan of certain rap songs rather than artists or the genre overall.  And… as fascinated as I’ve always been with language, words, myths and storytelling, I do appreciate it as an art form.
