It makes me think that supernatural forces everywhere spend their lives watching Dr. Phil, and if that’s the case I’d prefer to be alone in the universe.

Jeez.  Clearly the “circles” represent plates, and the REAL message is “eat turkey.“  Now THAT’s good advice!

I suppose it’s also possible the aliens are just messing with our heads. I can just picture them in their space ship laughing their asses off, or whatever they have that come close to an ass, nudging each other and saying “Look! They’re trying binary code now!“

Elide, I’d be very surprised if it turned out that there wasn’t life of some form to be found on other planets. Given the size and age of the known universe, the mind-numbingly huge number of stars within it, and the fact that we’ve found life just about everywhere we’ve looked on Earth no matter how hostile the environment seemed to be, I’d say the odds are probably pretty good that there’s other life out there. I’d even go as far as to suggest that we’re probably not the only intelligent and self-aware form of life to have developed.

What I find less likely is the idea that these creatures have evolved with the intelligence and creativity that would be required to develop the technology necessary to travel the vast distances between stars within a reasonable time frame for the sole purpose of gouging out intergalactic graffiti in some poor farmer’s crop of wheat. I’d certainly think they could come up with a better message to impart on us than “be free, like birds” after traveling all that distance.

Here’s a suggestion for you, Elide: Try backing up your point of view with something other than baseless statements about how afraid we are of the truth.

Personally if it turned out that aliens really were showing up on the planet for no reason other than to ruin wheat crops and make warm fuzzy statements about birds I’d be hard pressed to find that anything to be all that frightened about. If anything, I’d find it pretty funny that they came all this way for such a pointless activity. However, I’ve yet to see anything all that compelling in the way of evidence to suggest that these stories are even remotely close to being true and so far you’ve not offered anything that would change that opinion.

Believing in other life in the universe is not contradictory to not believing they came here to write in wheat.  I honestly believe it would be statistically improbable we are alone in the Universe, that doesn’t mean I think they have come here (yet).

Take care of your generalizations, they speak volumes about your mindset, but they do not hold in the larger population. Not everybody is afraid of the unknown, personally, it is what makes me get up in the morning, knowing there is more to learn, more to experience, more to grok. If there was no “unknown” what the hell would be the point of getting outta bed in the morning?

I think that you are confusing primal fears (fire) with neophobias (wheel) and predjudices (color). Fear of fire is not a fear of the unknown, but the known ... the knowledge it will hurt like a sonofabitch if you get burned.

Neophobes have always existed. These people are afraid of new things ... Neophilles too have always existed or we would still be living in caves. Neophilles are the people who spur humanity on to new ideas, technologies, and art.

Predjudices may sorta fit your ideas, but probably some it is not fear of the unknown IMO but faulty programming in the tender years.

If you remove the word THEY and insert Angels, elfs, klingons, gnomes, lil’ greenies, or the backwards messages on Judas Priest albums and it all adds up to the same thing… nadda.

We are not ‘children’ (ok, some are) but trust me, if a highly intelligent entity wanted to communicate with us, s/he/it has more than enough options, no need to resort to tilling the wheat fields.

I have to agree with Les and John’s assessment, it’s not that skeptics immediate dismiss all new claims or new perspectives to approaching something.  It’s just that skeptics look for the simplest explanation for phenomena.  Which isn’t a particularly close minded or fearful approach.  It’s not that skeptics are afraid of particular explanations.  It’s just that they’re doubtful that fanciful explanations are apt.  I mean if a design appeared in a field what would be the most straight forward explanation, that it’s a prank and humans did it.  To suggest that some extraterrestial species would take the effort to travel the great distances necessary to come here and knock down wheat involves more inferential jumps that require justification.  Skeptics just don’t think that the justification is there.
