That’s just sick. How could this guy do that to child. I don’t understand shaking a baby let alone putting one in a microwave. Yes babies can be annoying, but you don’t hurt them. But, as bad as what he did is, his wife response is even worse. How could anyone even try and make an excuse for this type of behavior? People like this just remind me how bad religion is for the world.

Yes it is sick, illegal, and just wrong no matter how you look at it. They will probably prosecute the guy, They should just take him out back with some rope, and save us all a lot of trouble.

My 30 years as an Undertaker ( and a compassionate one, I might add… ) led me to see many horrible things about humanity. I will never cease to feel some of the feelings of hopelessness.

I remember like it was yesterday, It has actually been two decades. But there was a beautiful 15 year old girl in a “ State of the Art “ Medical Center who died from needing an injection of ( White Blood Cells ) leukocytes. The family being Jehovah’s Witness did not allow for a blood transfusion as it was against their religious beliefs.

But we are not talking bags full of blood, and even if we are SO WHAT.. were talking a syringe loaded with white blood cells. Until her body can learn to develop them on it’s own.  I remember this because I was so mad that I cried. I remember all the people who fought through Chemo, accidents, and a million other things. Just to see this girls family thumb their nose at such an easy fix. NO....They would rather bury this girl, than offend their religion.

It’s strange, the only people here in Houston who seem aware of this are my friends and I. Granted, I don’t talk to many people these days.

I didn’t think of this until later, but this story is illustrative of one of the big problems I have with religious belief.

This woman can’t handle the reality that her husband flipped out and tried to fry their kid so she’d rather believe that an outside supernatural entity took control of her husband and forced him to do it. It’s wishful thinking at its worst.

But let’s assume for a moment that there really is a God and, by extension, a Satan and that Satan had the foresight to see that this man was going to be a particularly effective preacher and as such took steps to ensure it would never happen. Where the hell was God during this little episode? God is, presumably, more powerful than Satan and also all-knowing. What possible purpose could God have in A) allowing an innocent child to suffer any amount of time at all inside a microwave and B) allowing one of his faithful to be thwarted in his attempts at becoming a good preacher? Just about every reason you can come up with is reprehensible and not the sort of thing a loving an just God would engage in unless he’s not as loving and just as he’s made out to be.

Interesting thing about that Les. I remember reading a while ago that saying that “God told me to do it” is no longer a valid defense, but “Satan made me do it” can be considered as such.

Well Les I bet I can make a better argument for this that any christian you ask. Seriously ask some christians.

People go crazy all the time, and of course they’ll frame their craziness in the culture in which they live.  Which, in our culture, is Christian.  Christianity is no more responsible for these people than video games are responsible for school shooters.

I wrote about this on my site when the story broke.

I haven’t followed the story since, but it looked like another case of untreated mental illness. For what it’s worth, the wife claimed they saw doctors who couldn’t help the husband. I just hope the CPS managed to save the kid from these parents.

This may be a case of insanity, I doubt it. I think he is just flat fucking mean. The baby would not stop crying, and he decided on the fix.

I am not sure that I understand your question. But I have a feeling that the answer is, We are all accountable for our own actions at the end of the day regardless of our beliefs.

Well to answer that, No we are not directly responsible. But trying to get people to understand that ( Right and Wrong ) is not just an idea based solely on religious principle, but is rather secular in nature, does go with the territory of being a good person. The man I was referring to obviously has some issues that need to be examined. He is just flat nuts..

If he had said the word adultery as opposed to rape. It would have changed the dynamics completely. But he left me with a feeling of him be a potential predatory type.

Les, religion didn’t make the wife crazy either.  Just sadly deluded.  Or maybe not so sadly. She believes something that isn’t true, but it helps her deal with a crazy situation in some ways.  As a friend of mine once said, “People have their defenses because they need them.”

LJ, that’s a great question. Do we have the right to try to change anyone’s mind on anything?  Or for that matter to do anything, since the consequences are unforeseeable? Or what if inaction results in evil consequences?  I think we’re just stuck with not knowing the future.  Or a great deal of the past: that guy may well be a rapist in spite of being a Christian. 

Or your atheistic arguments might prevent some other person from becoming a televangelist, acquiring political power, and goading the president into invading another country.  So to the extent we can distill a “should” from the situation, we “should” not worry excessively about the outcome.  Be rational, and advocate what’s right the best you can.

It is sometimes hard, in times like these, to understand God’s way. Why would he allow nine innocent people to be run down in the prime of their lives by a senior citizen who, perhaps, shouldn’t be driving? It is then that we must understand, God’s sense of humor is very different from our own. He does not laugh at the simple “man walks into a bar” joke. No, God needs complex irony and subtle farcical twists that seem macabre to you and me. All that we can hope for is that God got his good laugh and a tragedy such as this will never happen again.

Well said - I often answer something along those lines when asked if I like children but more often than not I say: Yes, but I couldn’t eat a whole one.

My thoughts after reading the article were something like “hopefully the other prison fellas will know why that monster daddy got there”.

I’m wondering how the baby will react when old enough to understand.. and I’d sure like to know how religious that little guy will be, hopefully that kind of an experience will teach something valuable about rationality?

Man who microwaved baby wants dad’s rights

The father sentenced to prison for severely burning his 2-month-old daughter in a microwave oven is declining to give up his parental rights.

“He loves his baby,” Sam Cammack III, the attorney for Joshua Mauldin, said in a story published online Thursday in the Houston Chronicle. “He wants to be part of Ana’s life.”

The mother, Eva Mauldin, has relinquished her parental rights, Cammack said.

Personally, one of the last things this whack-job should be allowed is to be part of the child’s life.

Mauldin, convicted of injury to a child, was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in prison and fined $10,000. Jurors rejected his claim that he was insane when he put his daughter in the oven.

I’m with DOF. If the other inmates know what he’s in for, he’ll have a singularly unpleasant time at the taxpayer’s expense.

A custody hearing is scheduled for April 22. Child welfare officials are looking favorably on a plan for Ana’s foster parents, Heather and Jeremy Croxton, to adopt her.

“They have taken amazing care of her,” agency spokeswoman Gwen Carter said. “They love her; she loves them. We have regular contact with them, and we feel comfortable that she is safe.”

And hopefully this will go through.
