Newsday.com - Ohio Woman Admits to Lying About Jackpot

CLEVELAND—A woman who told police she bought and lost a lottery ticket worth $162 million all but admitted Thursday she made it up, saying tearfully: “I wanted to win so bad for my kids and my family. I apologize.”

Elecia Battle, 40, said she is dropping her lawsuit over the Mega Millions jackpot that was awarded Tuesday to 34-year-old Rebecca Jemison.

Battle apologized to her husband, Jemison and her lawyer.

“I’m not a bad person. I’m really not,” she said. “Everyone has a past.”

Yeah, everyone has a past, but not all of us are guilty of assault and credit fraud, among other things. I know what you’re thinking, “But she looks like such an honest and innocent person!”

Well, she did apologize.  How dare people judge her by her picture, she is probably an upstanding citizen who has paid for her past indescretions and just desires to give to her family the life she feels she deserves. 

Seriously, what was drugs was she taking that altered her thought process so much that she even could fathom the idea that she would be believed and possibly even profit from this?

Um, she lives in America? Land of the lawsuit and lack of personal responsibility? That’s my guess anyway.

It’s true that we shouldn’t judge her by her picture, but it’s startling when you compare it against the person who did win the immediate reaction (that I had at least) in believing one over the other. Battle looks like she expects you to distrust her and her expression doesn’t give you any reason not to.
