OK gang, if any of you have any past experiences with a website called ProductTestPanel.com then I’d like to hear about them. I got an email this morning that I’m sure was little more than spam, but it caught my eye and piqued my curiosity. It basically said that Best Buy was looking for folks to participate in a Secret Shopper program during the holiday buying period and that if I signed up I’d be sent a $1,000 gift card that I could use to purchase whatever I wanted which I would be allowed to keep afterwards for nothing more than filling out a questionnaire about how my shopping experience was.

Now this immediately set off warning bells in my head especially seeing as the link provided didn’t have the words Best Buy anywhere in them, but money is very tight this year and even I am vulnerable to being tempted by a free grand to spend as I wish when faced with a possible empty Christmas tree this year. The link itself pointed to a subpage of a site called FineBaskets.net and if you go to the root URL for the site it displays a page about a company called “Bonus Bonez” with little info on what the company is about, but the full URL in the email ends up redirecting you to a page at RetailReportCard.com which is a subdomain of ProductTestPanel.com. The page presented gives some brief info on the Secret Shopper program that sums things up in three points: 1) Get FREE money to shop! 2) Complete a retailer survey. 3) Keep the things you buy! And it has a nice big picture of a $1,000 Best Buy gift card. There’s a small FAQ outlining what a Secret Shopper is expected to do such as pay attention to the layout, cleanliness, and friendliness of the clerks as they shop and so on. Finally, there’s a spot to put in your zip code to see if there’s any opportunities in your area.

So I put in my zip code and found out that none of the BBs in my area needed anymore Secret Shoppers, but Circuity City was and it had a similar $1,000 offer. Checking the terms and limitations it appears that this is all quite legit and about all I open myself up to is some direct marketing in both email and/or snail mail most of which may consist of offers to try out products for free in exchange for answering surveys about the products. Seems you can opt-in for additional freebies by accumulating “points” to qualify with by agreeing to various offers from marketers as well. You’re not required to participate in anything you don’t want to, though.

It sounds great, but I’m always leery of anything that seems too good to be true or something for nothing (or not much effort) so I haven’t rushed to sign up yet. Mentioned it to Deadscot and he says he’s participated in something similar from time to time, though I didn’t get a chance to ask him if this was the same program before he had to rush off to work. So I’m turning to my regulars to see if anyone else has taken these folks up on their offer? Is this legit or a scam? Let me know if you’ve had any experiences with this company and how it went and whether you think I should bother. It’s certainly a tempting offer that would be a big help with gift shopping this year, but I just can’t shake my cynicism of it.

I have pdf of the offers you must complete to get your $1,000 gift card if anyone is interested.  You have to spend lots of $$$ on some of them.  If someone has a place I can upload to, I can.

Someone told me today that my name and firm was associated with your web page when one does a google search. I was shocked to see we were associated according to you with one of our building tenants Subscriberbase. We have nothing to do with their business!!!! I demand that you remove my name linked to your stupid web page.

Also remove my e-mail address from your records.

Gerald D Skipper is indignant: I demand that you remove my name linked to your stupid web page.

Also remove my e-mail address from your records.

What - no PLEASE?

Gerald, in addition to the usual good humor one can find on this stupid evil blog, there were some very unintentionally funny posts added over the past 24 hours as well. With your post, I seriously think you’ve managed to surpass the frothy, wild-eyed rantings of our Messiah, Buddy Page, with your insistence that Les remove your name and email addy from his stupid, evil blog . . . AS YOU POST WITH YOUR FULL NAME AND EMAIL ADDRESS in plain view within your spittle-flecked missive.

Bravo, Gerald D Skipper!  BRAVO!

Mr. Skipper allow me to clue you in on a few things:

First, the comment that includes the reference to your company—and I had to search to find it because I initially had no idea what you were talking about—was left by a visitor to the site and not myself. Opinions expressed in the comments of visitors are their own and are not necessarily those of the management.

Secondly, if your company does indeed own the building and is leasing space to the folks at SubscriberBASE, which you admit that you are, then you are in fact associated with said company at least tangentially. Naturally that doesn’t necessarily mean you have anything to do with the activities of your tenant, but you are conducting business with them and there are people out there who may decide that they do not want to associate with anyone who does business with the likes of SubscriberBASE.

Thirdly, all of the information included in that comment is in the Public Domain, violates no privacy laws, and can be found with just a few search engine queries. Nothing potentially libelous has been said about your company in the comment. The fact that your company is the landlord for the folks at SubscriberBASE is a fact you’ve admitted to and the supposition that you may also be their CPA is just that, supposition. There is nothing in the comment that would likely be considered actionable by any competent attorney. If you don’t like having your company associated with the likes of SubscriberBASE then I would suggest you cease your association with them as that is fully within your control.

Fourthly, the comment in question has been on this site for over 7 months now and this page has been indexed and archived by any number of search engines that happen to have some rather impressive cache systems. Even if I were inclined to modify the comment to remove the reference to your company it wouldn’t stop the information from being out there for years to come for anyone with even just a little knowledge on how to make use of those archives.

Finally, you’ll find I’m a lot more receptive when I’m contacted directly and asked nicely rather than when you demand in a comment that I conform to your desires. A private and sincere email likely would have netted you the outcome you were hoping for.

Instead you decided to make yourself look like an ass on a public webpage where everyone is free to look at it and laugh. You’ve done more damage to your reputation by your own hand than any passing mention of your company in a dossier about a spammer ever could have. Looking at my server logs I can’t help but notice that the GoogleBots are busy indexing this site yet again, so guess what new bit of information has become part of Google’s huge archive of webpages?

Welcome to the Internet, Mr. Skipper.

Just thought I’d point out an additional irony in Skippy’s delicious post.

In the same breath that he vehemently denies any responsibility for the actions of people who pay him to use his physical space, he clearly lays responsibility at Les’ feet for statements people make for free in his virtual space.

The righteous indignation just makes it funnier.

Well I read the first post by Les and read through the rest, but can’t seem to find anyone who has actually “successfully” completed all offers and received their gift. I know better, but was tempted by the Wii w/games, plus DS w/games, plus Sony laptop, plus Xbox and PS 3 offer and STUPIDLY signed up. Yes I completed all six offers including the last one buying over $2000 worth of furniture (thank God for credit cards) and the EuroPass tickets $1800 (out of 3 options, these two were the most useful). Thought I could send my son to Europe or at the least be able to return the tickets for a refund (yes I read the fine print). When I went to check my status in their member support it popped up with a status report from 2005 (RetailReportcard) that I had started and never completed (because of the cost). I did not know that they were affiliated (again dumbass me). It still doesn’t show the Product Test Panel promotion and I have emailed them twice. I think (dumbass me) got ripped off. But I will post again if I hear anything else. I got a sis who works in the AG’s office so if I got ripped totally I’ll contact her for advice.

A local radio station DJ broadcasted one of these programs on the air, as if it was a promotion.  My brother-in-law fell for it and thinks he’s getting a new playstation that isn’t even in stores yet.  My son got some new Dr Seus books out of the deal.

I swear, I can’t believe these people are still in business.  They have a system that doesn’t track people’s required purchases properly, and I am willing to bet that they like it that way.  There’s just enough stuff tracked, along with logins for people, to make it look like it could actually be legit, yet since its something that’s not regulated, and there’s really no customer service to address issues, people are pissed with them.  I am sure people are meeting all requirements, yet these people at SubscriberBASE don’t deliver, simply because their system never says the requirements were met… The people have the proof on their side with vendor and credit card receipts.

I think there should be an intelligent, organized investigation by the govenment or by investigators who can gather complaints and follow up to see if all requirements were met.  For those who met all the requirements listed on the site, they should begin contacting customer service under the supervision of the investigators.  If there’s no satisfaction from customer service to address issues then, it should be documented for a class action lawsuit.  There has to be a lawyer out there who has heard of these people. Is there a lawyer reading this who might take on such a case?

A MUST READ!!!****I ACTUALLY GOT MY BIG IPod****

First I must thank many of you for saving me from myself! But first I must say this: I’m still happily enjoying my 60Gig IPod that has just turned one and a half. It was nearly the exact same style web model marketing group but named Internet Opinion Group. In the end it all worked out and I nearly collapsed on the UPS delivery man when I saw it! The thing with these games is that they do everything in their power to either get you to lose interest or screw up. One slight mistake and OOPS! NO FREE-ISH TOYS!!! Funny that the final stage for a company with Internet in its name was for me to fill out piles of paperwork, print it out and send it in via SNAIL MAIL!!! Why do I have the IPod you might ask? Because I can be a very stubborn fukker when fukked with!!! So in the end I laid out about $175 for a Pod with a tag around $500 back then. The biggest problem with these games in my mind is that one remains pretty sure they’ll never see the toys and it takes about 4 months of this thinking to find out. The one thing they don’t offer you for purchasing is trips to the shrink! Overall I’d have to say that none of this stuff is really worth your time or sanity!!! From someone who’s done it and even succeeded---DON’T fall in.
Your buddies offered me a MAC BOOK PRO and a Canon 30D SLR on this one. How amazingly tempting it was, but I shall walk on and live my four months in peace. They know very well how to appeal to our greed and that’s what they’re up to. I can prove that since I own 4 notebooks and two cameras. Yes...SHAME on ME for wanting more! Naughty boy. They even know how to appeal to the HAVES as you can see...and even my friends wouldn’t consider me greedy. But the IBOOK could use a bigger sibling and my digicams are not SLR’s. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Ok after you jump through the “Hoops” you will get the check---B U T--- it is not worth your time. It does boil down to a waste of your time and money(stamps do cost!) Find a better outfit, they are out ther if you look hard enough, also start another e-mail address for the spam you will get. just after Christmas I had over 10,378 junk or bulk e-mails. I have done this a few times and they do add up.  Good fourtune if you try it.

The only prizes I have *EVER* heard of people get over the past 3 years are the iPods.... I challenge anyone to find someone who’s won the plasma TVs, PS2, the Canon Rebel SLRs or any of the other products.

So this story of someone getting an iPod is believable… but if someone posted here saying they got their 60 inch Plasma TV, I wouldn’t believe it till I saw it posted by tons of other people on various forums…

Congradulations on your iPod.

I’ve never done PTP, but I have done many other freebie sites. It’s a pain in th ass sure, but most of them are legit. Did I mention they are a pain in the ass. Last year I got over $12,000 in cash and gifts from these companies. All told, it cost me around $2000. There are several websites that deal with this scene

I originally posted on 11/25/06 regarding PTP. Boy have I jumped through hoops. The told me (when they finally responded to my emails) to wait 8 weeks for all of my stuff to be verified. I waited - the last two, coincidentally the very expensive furniture and train tickets, were never verified. So, again contact ensued with PTP. They told me to send in verification of email receipts. I did. Then they said I needed receipts for the furniture or pictures of the furniture in my house. Since the furniture was truck delivered I did not have receipts, so I took pictures and emailed them in. After that whole ordeal (its March remember and I started at the end of November 06), I finally got my redemption certificate. I printed it out and mailed it in about 2 weeks ago. I STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED MY “GIFTS”. I returned the train tickets because I can’t take a month off of work and they kept $300 of the $1800. This is still, in my mind, a magnificent ripoff and these companies need to be shut down. Even if I do get my incentive gifts, they are NOT WORTH the time and effort AND COST of these programs. If I get my stuff, I’ll post again.

Results of signing up on any of these sites or anything similar ones:
1.You get all the spam to can ever want(they now have your email right?).
2.Basic information(name,address,telephone number,etc)about you gets sold/bought by other companies,or God knows who.which means:
3.Your email address gets circulated on spambot lists.
4.They can now use your bank account, credit card to use in any way(buy stuff, etc)

Bottom line:
1.Marketing(which apparently includes spamming/scamming(which apparently is legit)) is a huge business network.
2.Data collection is key to their operations.Any kind of data about the victim.
3.We lose.they win.i know.its all twisted.

Just as a note to everyone.  I did something like this before.  It wasn’t product test panel, but another thing that was similar.  I had to complete 8 offers to get a Cingular 8525.  It took me about a month to complete the offers and send in the voucher.  In the next month, I received my brand new phone.  So, although I don’t know if this is a scam or not, the one I did worked.

That was from zolaenterprises.com but, they have deticated a new page to the scam following. There is talk of addrive vs leigh of zolaenterprises.com site going to court. Tons more scam busting from them over the years. This one is huge.

They are committing false advertising and interstate wire/mail fraud (which carries a $1,000,000 fine and 30 years in prison PER CHARGE). If they have screwed you SUE THEM. I forgot to add once you are a member, you enter your email address, and that takes you to the page where you pick from 4 different products to evaluate. It may take quite a few times to click on the products before you get picked to evaluate them. After I first signed up, they contacted me to make sure I wanted to do this, they called me. like I said, it takes a while to get started, and takes a while before the company will pick you, sometimes you might get picked for any of them so be sure to click on each one every day. But I do believe that you have to wait until they contact you. There is info on this part in the term section for the sites, i think it is towards the bottom.
I have received a slow cooker, vacuum, cordless keyboard and mouse, straighting iron, weather clock, and laser pointer to make sure things on the wall hang evenly, also will get a battery charger today. Only sign up as a tester, do not do the incentive program where you have to go through and sign up for other things.
Hope this helps, I LOVE THESE SITES, I have never paid any money for anything.
