Lieberman loses, terror plot thwarted. I got nothing.

Been trying to come up with a couple of entries about two of the big news items everyone’s talking about today. Namely that Joe Lieberman lost his primary election, but has sworn to run anyway as an Independent, and the big terrorist plot in the U.K. to blow up planes using some form of explosive gel mixed in bottles of sports drinks set off by MP3 players or cellphones.

Alas, at the moment, I don’t have a whole lot to say on either topic other than I’m very happy to hear Joe Loserman Lieberman lost, but it’s too early to celebrate until he loses the November election, and I’m very happy to hear that we managed to stop people from blowing up some planes. So consider this a semi-open thread to say whatever comes to mind on these two topics.

How about the reader(s) of Boing-boing who asked, “If these guards are confiscating potentially explosive liquids, why are they pouring them into a large plastic garbage can in the middle of the airport crowd?”

An excellent question indeed, considering a quick internet search will show that some of these liquid explosives are designed to spontaneously explode when mixed.

Maybe that story about the guy who got killed trying to open a rocket-propelled granade with a sledgehammer was actually a story about an airport security ordinance disposal worker…

Which suddenly reminds me of an incident of my own. I saw an unattended box at the entrance to airport security once, and reported it.

A security member promptly arrived. The promptness impressed me until I saw him pick up the box, hold it near is ear and shake it.

I wonder if he was listening for. Perhaps a deafening boom?

Frac, that is a hilarious story.

Reminds me of the Normal (IL) cops, investigating a bank robbery.  The robber left a box on the counter that he said was a bomb.  They cleared everyone out of the building and one cop stood just outside each door to warn others from entering the building while the bomb squad drove up from Springfield.

Yes, I saw them.  Standing in front of the (wait for it) glass door with a bomb behind it…

Luckily for the rocket scientists of the law enforcement world, the box did not contain a bomb.

I’ve often been amazed at how truly lucky the stupid are.
God said: I’ll make this one stupid but I’ll make him lucky.  LOL

I’ve discovered that it all boils down to brain wiring: your brain is wired to worship magic or it isn’t, either it’s wired to utilize logic or it isn’t, either it’s analytical of myths or it isn’t.

Well, that’s the greatness of low bid contracting for airport security for you I guess.  Makes sense to me to hire the guys that will take the least amount of money for the job, surely they MUST be the best qualified for the job.

Isn’t that the logic behind ALL those ‘lets go for the lowest bid’ decisions?

I always stuns me how naive people are in that regard. Oh sure, they will agree to the above proposition. But then they will turn around in the supermarket, buy the cheapest meat and vegetables they can get, and whine about food scandals.
