Lieberman claims only he has chance to defeat Bush, says Dean nomination is “ticket to nowhere.”

Is it just me? Or does Lieberman sound like he’s in the wrong political party?

Yahoo! News - Lieberman: Dems Must Shun Gov’t Programs

WASHINGTON - Presidential candidate Joe Lieberman warned Monday that his Democratic rivals threaten to send the party “into the political wilderness” with a return to big-government programs and less-than-strong stands on national security.
...
Lieberman did not name any of his opponents but took a shot at their political stands on a range of issues.

He criticized Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt’s plan to provide health care for nearly all Americans and his opposition to trade treaties such as the North American Free Trade Agreement.

He assailed those who opposed the U.S.-led war against Iraq—former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, Sen. Bob Graham of Florida, Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio former Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley Braun and Al Sharpton.

Lieberman is positioning himself as the foil to Dean, whose campaign has taken off on his criticism of Bush’s tax cuts and the conflict in Iraq. Lieberman said those positions “could really be a ticket to nowhere.”

Well, one way to ensure I don’t vote Democrat in the next election would be to allow Lieberman to win the nomination. I don’t like him any better than G.W. so it’d be replacing one evil with another that’s just as bad in my mind.

Lieberman is only revealing his Repugnican leanings by this; hopefully folks wake up and realize it.

On defense, Lieberman is only speaking the truth.  I believe a large majority of the people feel a strong defense policy is a current necessity.  Our prosecution of the war on terror will obviously benefit Israel, where I am told there are many Orthodox Jews, just like Joe buddy.  I don’t think he’s trying to play Republican; I think he’s promoting a defense policy that will help enrich Israel…make sense?

Now for controversy:

I do not believe we should have a Jew as president!  If we do, be prepared for the Arabs to go completely bonzo!  They may as well put a target on the White House.  There will no longer be any “plausible deniability” that this country doesn’t have Zionist leanings.  Now I am not a bigot and grew up around zillions of Jewish people.  I just don’t think that in these troubled times there should be a Jewish President of the USA.

On the same note, I was very relieved when Colin Powell announced he would not seek the office!  If Powell won, I have very little doubt he would be assassinated within months of being sworn in.  There are just too many idiots around filled with hate and it only takes one with a rifle!  I heard an interview Powell gave about the incredible amount of hate mail and threats he received when people were assuming he might run.  I remember what happened when ML King was killed in ’68.  We went through downtown DC right after the riots and it looked like a war zone.

I think it would be great, from a diversity point of view, to have a Black or a Jewish president.  With the current world situation though, I hope it doesn’t happen soon.

So Mild Bill, we’re supposed to allow a critical mass of bigotry determine whom we elect? If Leiberman is nominated, I don’t think I’ll be able to muster up the energy to drag myself to the polls. There’s just too little difference between him and Bush. But I sure as heck wouldn’t rule out a Jew just because “Arabs would go completely bonzo” or write off Powell because white supremicists wouldn’t like it.

He’s for a strong defense alright - of Israel!  He’s also silent (to Democrats, anyway) on the issue of getting rid of Bush’s tax cuts.  The Democrats aught to give him his walking papers.

As for anti-Semitism, I agree with Lilibet - that is a sorry-ass reason to object to Joe.  Interestingly, however, Joe himself is quite friendly with powerful organizations of freaked-out Christian fundamentalists (e.g. Ashcroft) whose strong support of Israel relates to their belief that Jewish possession of the holy land is a prerequisite to the 2nd coming of Christ (which will then supposedly precipitate the Christian conversion of a small number of Jews, and the relegation of the rest to the torments of Hell!).  Way to keep the faith!

Lilibet and Ken

I think you misunderstood me and I was prepared for this eventuality.  That’s why I prefaced my last posting with the “Now for controversy” warning.  I didn’t say we should “care” what any one says or think, but we should view the implications from a “real world” perspective.  The main reason we are reviled in the Arab world is (inarguably) our support for Israel.  I do not believe that hatred will decline with a Jew running the country.

On Lieberman cozying up with the “fundies”…I believe he is insincere at best and a pandering weasel at worst.  I saw an interview once where he was asked what he thought about Jesus.  He responded with the politically correct, “He was a great man and a great prophet”.  Here is the definition of prophet from dictionary.com:

1. A person who speaks by divine inspiration or as the interpreter through whom the will of a god is expressed.
2. A person gifted with profound moral insight and exceptional powers of expression.
3. A predictor; a soothsayer.
4. The chief spokesperson of a movement or cause.

I thought Jesus said he was the son of god and clearly Jews don’t believe that.  Do Jews believe Jesus’ prediction of his second coming?  I don’t recall the Jews ever stating that Jesus was their chief spokesperson either. So though Lieberman doesn’t believe anything Jesus said, he is a “great man and a great prophet”.

I totally agree with Ken; the “fundies” look at the Jews as sinners who have to be converted!  My wife is a recent convert to the American Taliban Movement…I mean Baptist.  We had a new neighbor move in and when she found out he was Jewish, she was as astonished as if Martians had moved in!  Very strange!

On Colin Powell, do you deny that if he ran for president his life would be in “grave” peril?  From the interview I saw him give, I believe he thinks it would be.  I don’t believe Powell is a coward, but I definitely don’t think he is stupid.  What would be the consequences of the first Black president being assassinated!  I believe it could cause unrest that would make the ML King riots look like a Tupperware party.  Philosophically I would absolutely love it if Powell was president, but I live in the real world where it takes just one barely literate idiot with a gun to change history.  I WOULD NOT object to either a Jewish or Black president.  These are things I would just rather not see (like Hilary Clinton in a thong).  Bad analogy, I don’t want to see that and I WOULD object to that!

Man, I thought I would be ripped to shreds for this one!  You guys are getting soft in your old age.  Lilibet are you a female?  I don’t have any problem at all with a female president…as long as she has dinner on the table for her old man every night…muhahahahaha!

Bill,

I agree that Powell’s life might be in danger if he were to run for president - particularly if he were to run in 2004 as an independent as a few whacky idealists have suggested.  He would probably die in a small-aircraft accident similar to those that recently killed Carnahan, Kennedy Jr., and Wellstone.

Konspiracy Ken

Are you implying something diabolical?  Airplanes have been known to crash with no intervention from the United Nations’ black helicopter units you know smile

Have they!!?  Um . . . maybe it wasn’t the UN ones . . . maybe it was the M12 and their connections with the (Charon looks at the sky) seven ft. tall Greys! wink (Not the Little Greys - they’re the nice ones).

The UN had nothing to do with these incidents - they lack the unified will.  Nor were aliens involved, as this administration lacks that sort of imagination.  It was a wet-boy from Missouri with a penchant for aircraft.
