Oh man, I am getting really sick of seeing “No Trans Fat!” on packaging. I swear I actually saw a package of bacon that had “Zero grams of trans fat” on the label at the grocery store a few months ago, but I can’t find it now.  Maybe somebody called them out on it. Of course, lard could be labeled as Zero trans fat too, but it doesn’t mean its good for you, though I get the feeling the label is used to attempt to fool stupid people into thinking some foods are actually healthy.  Kinda like saying “Now with no cyanide!”

What you say is true BB, but considering the amount of trans-fat used in fast food, and considering how harmful it actually is, I can see why companies would put that on their labels.

With trans-fat its not just calories you have to worry about. Regular fat is unhealthy of course, but it can be “cancelled out” by exercise. I suspect that since trans-fat is not naturally occurring, our bodies have absolutely no idea how to handle it, which is what makes it so deadly.

Your cyanide analogy is not quite appropriate. If we lived in a society where there was significant cyanide contamination of food, then “Now with no cyanide!” would be a valid selling point.

Actually, I was kind of alluding to the fact that bacon never has had trans fat, any more than apples ever have.

I will be the first to loudly proclaim that KFC is—trans-fat or no—finger-dripping bad for you.

I’ll also be the first to admit that, on thank-heavens-it’s-rare occasion, my wife is kind enough to bring home a bucket for us to gorge on.

I generally eat a healthy diet, but some foods are too good not to eat.  Fried chicken is too good to snub.  I was disappointed when Kentucky FRIED Chicken became KFC.  I would have gone with KFFC.  Kentucky Fried Fuckin’ Chicken.

That said, I encourage the addition of grilled chicken to the menu.  If you can fry chicken, you can cook it any other way just as easily, and choice is a wonderful thing.  Now if we can just get them to quit making the side dishes out of powdered milk and cardboard, it might be worth what they charge.

For otherwise healthy-eating fried chicken addicts like myself, fuck KFC anyway!  I recommend checking the deli departments at local grocery stores.  The batter isn’t quite as rich as KFC, it’s usually a little more homestyle, but still well-breaded.  Even the most expensive stores here have hot fried chicken for about 3/4 restaurant price, and I can often find whole(8-piece) cold fried chicken for anywhere from $3.99 to $7.50.  Best of all, you generally get bigger, leaner, less greasy pieces than you would from KFC or any other chain.  KFC is tasty and all, but it’s just a drop in the bucket of good fried chicken.

Everything is fine in moderation.  Heck, even lard fried bread (well, fried in bacon grease) might be ok to eat once in awhile, if you like that sort of thing.  I definitely agree though, some food is just too good to not eat. Pizza would be another great example of that I think (good pizza, not that Domino’s crap or most frozen pizzas).
