Just When You Though Alabama Couldn’t Sink Any Lower….

...some backwoods hick of a politician tries to create a bill that would ban any books written by homosexual authors in public school. Yes, you heard me right. Apparently those evil homosexuals are brainwashing school children. You know that lesbian scene in Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple”? It’s all part of the homosexual agenda.

Republican Alabama lawmaker Gerald Allen says homosexuality is an unacceptable lifestyle. As CBS News Correspondent Mark Strassmann reports, under his bill, public school libraries could no longer buy new copies of plays or books by gay authors, or about gay characters.

Books by any gay author would have to go: Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote and Gore Vidal. Alice Walker’s novel “The Color Purple” has lesbian characters.

I saw that on the news a few days ago and my jaw about hit the floor.  I bet Mr. Allen hasn’t even read those books.  He needs to get help and an education.

*sigh* “I guess we dig a big hole and dump them in and bury them,” Allen said.  “It sounds like Nazi book burning to me,” said SPLC spokesman Mark Potok.

Basically just a form of censorship that I believe (or I hope?) will not pass.  It urks me that some people don’t understand that freedom of religion for them means freedom of religion for ME as well!  (and you and you and you ...)

I just need to write ‘another’ bible with a more centrist view on things and tout that around ...

Luckily, this bill died, but it did not come to a vote:

When the time for the vote in the legislature came there were not enough state legislators present for the vote, so the measure died automatically.

I wonder if this applies to composers too?  Goodbye, Nutcracker Suite ... Carnival of The Animals ... West Side Story ... songs from Beauty & The Beast and Aladdin ... all very popular pieces that appeal to children or teens.  And what of artists, architects, etc.?

Perhaps it will backfire.  If enough teachers have to explain to their students why they can’t listen to this or read that, maybe it will change a few attitudes.  Wishful thinking ....

Jeffercine, you just gave me an idea.

All we need to do to secure equal rights for gays is to make homosexuality a RELIGION!

How’s that for a plan?  We insist on freedom of religion for gays, lesbians and transgendered people, decry all attempts at discrimination on them as being “attacks on people of faith,” and take the wind RIGHT out of the Christian right’s fucking sails.

Brock, I want to see a copy of the Ten Gay Commandments on Les’s desk FIRST thing in the morning!  We can all march to the courthouse together to post them. grin

Geekmom, I was thinking about that and thought it would be excellent!  But then they would decree it’s a choice.  Ugh.  I’m all for creating Gayism? Homoinity? OOOO ... Queerism! as a Religion though.

I put it on his website instead. Sorry, I couldn’t resist this clever idea of yours.

So?  Christianity is a choice too.  If you have to respect one, you have to respect the other.  We can’t have these horrible secular attacks on faith, can we?

But what I want to know is, will the Southern Reformed Gayists allow the ordination of straight clergy??

I nominate Brock for Gay Pope! grin

LMAO!!!  Ok, I’ve got some research to do this weekend!  And I think we would allow straights or ANYONE for that matter, be at any level of the clergy (or whatever fascimile we have), since open-mindedness and acceptance would be a primary function, feature and promise of Gayism to everyone!  You don’t have to be gay to be a Gayist!  Just have to be willing to accept us equals as we of them.  (I accept my straight friends name as my friend and neighbor!) HA!  Maybe a different name to intice more people across the board?  Harveyism?  Milkism?

Christian intolerance follows this recipe: pick a sin that doesn’t (usually, or at least not that anyone knows about) tempt you and hammer it relentlessly.  Homosexuality fits the bill nicely.

But if God inspired the whole Bible as the fundy wingers like to believe, how do the account for the fact that the Bible has only around a dozen verses against homosexuality, and over two thousand about helping the poor?  That ratio should be pretty hard to ignore. Do they do more to help the poor than to make life difficult for homosexuals?

It should be obvious to any right thinking person, I mean if it were evolution I would think that you could observe a tornado tearing through the heart of Alabama and assembling a perfectly functioning homosexual out of slackjawed yokels! Evolution indeed!

Eric, you are twisted!

Do they do more to help the poor than to make life difficult for homosexuals?

DoF, don’t you see? It’s all about helping the poor- the poor, misguided homosexuals that is.  Besides, the homosexuals are actively recruiting amidst our sons and daughters- you don’t hear the poverty stricken saying (apologies to Robert Browning):

Grow poor along with me
The worst is yet to be
The least of life, for which our thirst was made
(hic)

The poor want to be poor, so who are we to thwart their desires?  The homosexuals, however, don’t really want to be gay, so we must help them find the light at the end of the tunnel.

So the bible condemns homosexuality. There’s a Simpson’s quote that’s appropriate right about now

Reverend Lovejoy: I think you should get a divorce

Marge:  But isn’t divorce a sin?

Rev. Lovejoy: Marge, have you ever sat down and read the bible?  Technically, we can’t even go to the bathroom.

Brock, are you a homosexual?

Nah, I’m just doing research.

Dude, where have you been? Yes, I’m gay but don’t let that admission define me. Sometimes I feel that more people don’t talk to me here because they feel uneasy about my professed sexuality. But I’m really not a fan of those who would reduce my worth, or elevate it, due to the gender I tend to sleep with. 98% of each day I am as normal a human as anyone else here.

If I am elected His Feminence and then the Gay Pope, however, I may have to alter my behavior by gaying it up. Homoligion requires focus and a pouf-mobile would help me to become more devout and homolier than thou. I realize I would have a much larger share of sycophants then your not-so-regular Joe but with greater power comes greater boyfriends. I know what I stand to gain.
