I’ve said it before: The world would be a better place…

... if more Christians were like ***Dave and less were like Pat Robertson:

Shame on the Vatican for basically agreeing with the Moslem cartoon rioters:

The Vatican on Saturday condemned the publication of cartoons lampooning the Prophet Mohammad which have outraged the Muslim world, saying freedom of speech did not mean freedom to offend a person’s religion.

Yes it does. Because without allowing the possibility of the latter, the former is meaningless. Practically anything anyone can say of some substance is likely to “offend a person’s religion.”

“The freedom of thought and expression, confirmed in the Declaration of Human Rights, can not include the right to offend religious feelings of the faithful. That principle obviously applies to any religion,” the Vatican said.

“Especially ours,” the Vatican said in subtext.

Nobody is claiming a “right to offend.” Freedom of thought and expression simply means that the prospect of someone feeling offended (whether offense was intended or not) isn’t something that can be allowed to legally block freedom of thought/expression. Otherwise, we better all shut up pretty damned quick.

It does my heart good to remind myself that there are folks like ***Dave out there who are quite capable of both believing in their religion as well as maintaining a rational thought process. Go read the full entry.

Here, I’ll compensate by being pedantic and noting that it should be “and fewer were like Pat Robertson.”

While I do not spend every waking hour trying to think up new ways to offend people, I also do not go out of my way to self-censor what I say. That is unless I put myself in a situation that requires a certain decorum (ie: at a funeral I do not make jokes about humping the corpse, etc.)

However, due to the out of control reaction to a few cartoons I now feel the burning desire to add fuel to the fire. I heard this morning on NPR that there was a call for Holocaust cartoons and I have a truly tastless one in mind (the punchline is ‘do you smell smoke?’), I am also considering some kind of cartoon wherein the Hindu goddess Durga is giving out handjobs (she has multiple arms). How about Uncle Sam in Alberto ‘the torture king’ Gonzalezes dungeon getting brutally ass raped by the entire Bush administration, the religious right, and corporate america ala Pulp Fiction? I smell a contest brewing!

“The freedom of thought and expression, confirmed in the Declaration of Human Rights, can not include the right to offend religious feelings of the faithful. That principle obviously applies to any religion, the Vatican said.
“Especially ours, the Vatican said in subtext.

I find two things hilarious about this statement. First, how in the hell can “freedom of thought” NOT include the right to offend anyone? Freedom of thought can’t be touched by anyone, regardless of what kind of government one is subject to. So how exactly can freedom of thought be monitored? Methinks the Vatican should have chosen its words a little more carefully.

Second, the part about “especially ours” is so ridicously typical of these people that it makes me want to weep (while simultaneously laughing uproariously). “It’s wrong to ridicule people’s religious beliefs,” so they seem to be saying, “but it’s especially evil to insult the One True Religion, which is obviously ours.” Give me a fucking break.

Sadie, I should point out that the “especially ours” comment was actually a comment by Dave and not the Vatican. The Vatican would never be so blatantly honest about it.

Handjobs from Durga… likely quite painful, given her nature wink

They support freedom of speech only until it is used to criticize their beliefs. How typical of the Catholic church.
