According to this Reuters news blurb actor David Tennant will replace Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor for the second season of the new TV series.

The BBC said Tennant, 33, would replace Christopher Eccleston who announced he was quitting after one series as the Doctor.

Tennant, who will star alongside Billie Piper, will be the 10th Time Lord.

“I grew up loving Doctor Who and it has been a lifelong dream to get my very own Tardis,” he said on Saturday.

“Taking over from Chris is a very daunting prospect—he has done a fantastic job of reinventing the Doctor for a new generation and is a very tough act to follow.”

Tennant had the lead role in the U.K. TV series Casanova as well as taking on the role of Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

I’m still bummed that Eccleston only signed up for the one season as I’m enjoying his portrayal quite a bit. The second episode aired on CBC this past Tuesday and I thought it was pretty good. The new series isn’t entirely what I had hoped for, but it’s close enough that I’m happy it’s back and I look forward to seeing what Tennant does with the role.

We’ve now had episodes 3 and 4 in the UK and I’m liking the new Doctor as well. He seems to have a lot of “flair” compared to older doctors. He also seems to be a lot keener to run around.

Theres a brilliant bit in the latest episode where you here him shout “defence pattern delta” as he leads a troup of soldiers through a building.

I’m really bummed about the fact he’s leaving after 1 series… I just hope the new guy does an equally good job.

I just noticed… On David Tennant’s IMDB page it shows that he starred in a Dr Who “pilot” episode created in 2003 called “Doctor Who: Scream of the Shalka” as a caretaker.

Also… Richard E Grant played the doctor.
