When that winning lotto ticket comes my way, I’m going to mix a radio station on live365.com. You can bet Don Was will be on the rotation… now I have “somewhere in America, there’s a street named after my dad...” running through my head.
LJ, Was (Not Was) is (was?) a band that started out right here in the Detroit area back in 1979. The founding members were David Weiss (a.k.a. David Was) and Don Fagenson (a.k.a. Don Was) and the music the put out was, to put it simple, rather odd. As I recall they had a couple of minor dance hits off their second album Born to Laugh at Tornadoes which they released in 1983. Though their biggest hit was to come in 1988 with Walk the Dinosaur which is probably the one song by the group that most people have ever heard of. Don Was did quite a bit of work as a producer for other groups too such as the B52s.
Oh look, there’s a Wikipedia entry about the group which goes into more detail about them. Glad I checked as it seems they’re back together again after having separate for several years. It appears they have plans to release a new album soon titled Boo!, which will have new recordings of some of their 80’s songs as well as some new material. Sweet!
There’s a semi-official Was (Not Was) website called World Wide Was and Don Was has made a few videos available from his own homepage. Lastly you can preview snippits of their songs over at the MP3.com website from all of their albums (and buy the tracks if you wish).
If you really want to get a feel for how odd they were I suggest listening to the clips from Hello Dad… I’m in Jail and Man vs. The Empire Brain Building. My wife doesn’t care for Was (Not Was) at all.
