While I dont want to agree even the slightest with the Church of Scientology (duh, it’s a Church), I do think that psychiatrists tend to be just a little too ready with the drugs. And I base this opinion on no evidence whatsoever, just my personal beliefs.

Not that its relevant in this case however.

In my Psych 9 class we found the only research, done,I believe, by Harvard, to compare psychotherapy to a control group without, showed no statistical difference. Ergo, the same number got better with or without. It’s possible that some may have benefited, but there is little evidence of it. There is something to be said, however, for the benefits to society of keeping psychos under lock and key for “observation and treatment” so the general public doesn’t have to deal with them. Who cares if they get “better”? 

As somebody who once took medication against panic attacks for half a year, I can attest that it helped where “talking it over” had failed consistently. Or maybe it was just a placebo effect? I think not. Not solely, in any case.

As for the Scientologists: Can’t have somebody operating (on your) thetan. Hey - that sounds nasty, doesn’t it?

If she had refused a visit from the Chakra Re-alignment team, would you be asking if she regretted that too?

I think that some doctors seem quick to prescribe a pill, especially the new ones, and parents are quick to accept something that may make their problems go away.  My perspective comes from the ADD drugs.  There are other ways to treat ADD and I think too many people opted for the quick fix.  All the drugs did for me was to turn me into an impotent, uncreative, uncalculating, zombie.  I couldn’t think straight or do many normal activities while on them.  And I was diagnosed with ADHD.

The thing that helped me the most was a healthier diet with more whole foods, fruits, and vegetables, followed with more exercise.  I think many of our problems we seek to find an answer for in pill form can be solved with a healthier organic diet and exercise.

With that I do understand there is a need for the pills, but I think doctors, when they can, should try to prescribe a healthier lifestyle for their patients first.

Psychotherapy is Freudian talk therapy - it is not the same as giving antipsychotic meds to someone suffering from schizophrenia.  A person with that (organic) disorder won’t be helped at all by talk therapy.

The field of talk therapy has advanced since Freud’s time, however.  Sometimes reframing a problem in a new way helps a lot. 

There are many kinds of ADD/ADHD, by the way.  And there are different kinds of drugs, plus the biochemical individuality of each person.  So drugs are bound to get a bad rep as a lot of doctors say; “Oh, you have ADHD, and the drug company rep said to prescribe Strattera™ for that.  Or was it Focusyn™?"

LH, nope and that’s entirely due to the fact that psychiatry has quite a bit more evidence in support of it than Chakra realignment does.

Since kirlian photos are an electric effect I hypothesise that shoving a paperclip into a power socket should re-align your chackras nicely - the pain of electric shock therapy allowed people to atone and long term they literally forget their transgressions, along with their identity and everything else

I have read most of the works of L. Ron Hubbard, and it would be fair for me to say that I do not relate Scientology with him. I see a group of people that are now feeding off of it’s dead founder. Ron Hubbard made a lot of sense about a lot of issues. No… He’s not perfect, but he had a lot of good ideas about everyday life, and I place emphasis on his ideology about the raising of children.. Scientologist today are a scary lot. 

We as a Society cannot build prisons fast enough to contain the need. Many of those people are not criminals, they are mentally ill. If Psychology in general were a working performance module, I would think we would live in a better world than the dangerous lethal society that we have.

The book “ New Slant on Life “ is a good book to start with by L. Ron Hubbard. And here is a quote from it about children.

I can tell you for a fact that very few of those people in question see psychologists on any sort of regular basis (or at all), it’d simply cost us too much money, as most of them can’t afford it.

It’s a lot cheaper to have a psychiatrist prescribe some psychotropic drugs, which often times people decide to stop taking, and that’s when you start having problems with them.

Children are not dogs

You’re right they are not dogs they are however animals none the less. Until about the age of 12 (on average, you have to take each kid one at a time) humans are severely lacking in cognitive reasoning skills. As a rule the young human mind understands punishment and reward, and not the nuances of social order.

Neurotwitch, it depends on which filter software they’re using. I know we’re banned in a couple of them. I’d expect it’s the site name, but it could be they didn’t want to make their patients any more ill than they already were.

I’ve noticed a lot of parents are good at either one side of 12 or the other, you get some who are very understanding but provide neither fun or dicipline, and the complete reverse who put a lot of effort into childcare but continue to treat them as children beyond that because they think they’ll stay the same. Some adults view ‘growing up’ as taking on pointless responsibilities in a military-like robotic manner, and when children disagree they never grow up in the eyes of that parent, regular society always sees the parent as right - it’s one of those things where their mind is already made up, because parents are more influential, and to the child it feels like they’d have to take a backwards step, one that won’t preserve their sanity

DOF...In this case you are both right to a degree. When reading Ron Hubbards works. A person has to take away what they feel is useful and correct thinking.

I am not trying to kiss your ass or anything. But I hang on, and strongly consider your opinions. You are actually one of the smartest people that I have ever heard. I feel the same way about Ron Hubbard. You both have a unique way of expressing your thoughts that causes a person ( If Willing ) to attain a higher thought pattern.
