I may be addicted to WoW, but at least I’m not as bad as THIS guy.

The Burning Crusade expansion pack for World of Warcraft, which raises the level cap from 60 to 70, was launched a mere 43 hours ago and someone has already managed to hit level 70:

Gullerbone, a 24-year-old French WoW player, reached level 70 at 4:04 am (CET) on January 17, 2007. He is believed to be the world’s first.

The Burning Crusade, the expansion to World of Warcraft, the most popular MMO on earth with eight million subscribers, went on sale in the UK at midnight (GMT) on Monday 15 January. [Ed’s Note: Servers didn’t go live until midnight on the 16th.]

It took him all of 28 hours to pull this feat off, but not without the help of some friends. At one point around 40 of them to be precise…

Gullerbone used a tactic of ‘tagging’ computer controlled enemies, which allowed him to achieve experience points even though his guildmates killed them.

When asked how many players he had help from, he said: “Well at first we had only five (during the first 10 hours or so) so that 10 of the members could get to lvl 62. Then in the morning we were 15 in order to kill the mobs at a faster rate. Finally in the evening, everyone was involved and we could gather a 35 man raid to help me in Netherstorm with our new lvl 62 doing most of the job.”

I suppose it’s an achievement of a sort, but it’s a bit silly because you can’t really enjoy any of the content by grinding in such a fashion. I suppose folks should play the game the way that they want to play it, but it seems to me he’s missing the point.

In a lot of the player’s opinions the content doesn’t start until 60. And from what’ve I heard of BC the content these guys want doesn’t start until 70. So there ya go.

Yeah, Elwed. In my experience a lot of players seem to be very competitive for social honors - and having a character at level 60 with top-tier gear is the gold standard, as well as a normative goal.

It’s very much gone the way of Diablo II - people even get advanced scripting going on (like WoW-glider) because the entire rest of the game (up until about level 50 or so) isn’t considered worth their time. For fast players, that’s still hovering around 240 hours (to days /played) - and versus Final Fantasy XI, that’s considered remarkably short.

What’s funny is that, despite that, I started three characters and leveled them all without any gadgets to between 48 and 58. Then I quit. I never even did end-game.

Sorry, Elwed - I ultimately sidetracked your question. What I forgot to state explicitly, is that all the longer dungeons that require more concrete coordination and give better gear start in the 50’s and go up. The big dungeons, with 20- and 40-man raids, and all the guild associations, server firsts and fame, and social aspects that go with that, start at 60. Someone described WoW as a chatroom with a lot of stuff to do - considering the degree that social imperatives change the approach to the game, that’s not such a bad assessment.

If by “enjoy” you mean lag that potentially could kill. It’s settling down a little, but that first zone in the new world is like Barrens chat mixed with Bullet Time.

Funniest line I saw last night was some player typing “I will see this in the chat window in 20 minutes”.

Patness, WoW is not for me. Wow-Glider, on the other hand, looks like a fun thing to work on.

Yeah I agree that this guy seems to be ripping himself off by thrashing his way through… How ever thats a massive amount of experience to gain in 25 odd hours even with his little tricks...It took me 4-5 hours of marathon grinding to go 59-60,so i’m gonna call this story horse-shit.
