It’s 1:06AM and I’m about to try and get some sleep. One of my best friends was killed in an auto accident as he was leaving work this evening. If you live in the Metro Detroit area then you’ve probably heard about it on the evening news. I wasn’t home from work myself for more than 20 minutes when I received word. The first part of the evening was spent at the hospital with his mother and another good friend where I helped to ID his body. The second part was spent alternating between dealing with my own grief and calling mutual friends to inform them of the sad news. The media are short-stroking it all over the place because the car that struck his was a police vehicle on its way to join a high-speed chase.

I wanted to write up something about him, to pay a bit of tribute to a man I’ve been friends with for 20 years. Words fail me at this time. My eyes are sore and bloodshot and my grief keeps getting in the way. So I am going to try and get some sleep now. I will try to write some more on this later.

Les, you know I’m thinking about ya. And you know I’m no more than a call away if you want to talk, or if there is anything I can do.

Les, I’m sorry for your loss. I know how hard this can be, and just wanted to offer my condolences. It’s never easy.

I never know what to say in these situations, so I’ll keep it short.

You have my sympathy and my hopes for strength and comfort.

Even though I hadn’t seen him in a while, Bill will be missed.
He was a really great guy.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. There’s never anything that can be said in these situations that makes it any easier, but the knowledge that there are so many I can turn to if I need the help in coming to terms with this is a greater comfort than any turn of phrase could hope to be.

Sorry to hear about the loss, Les - I did hear about it, and almost drove in the area (as I live in Dearborn)… My thoughts are with you, my friend.  -Les
