It’s not often that a good bit of news comes to my attention so I am pleased that this is probably my very first post that isn’t a rant (or a complaint). It seems that a few major markets will be getting a new radio program brought to them by Progress Media. It’s talk radio…it’s Liberal…it’s the O’Franken Factor! Al Franken, the author of such books as Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot (and Other Observations) and Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them - A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right, has signed on to host a talk show.

Franken, who has established himself as one of the country’s leading conservative-bashers, said: “My first priority is to get sued by a right-wing jerk in order to generate interest in my new show, ‘The O’Franken Factor.‘ Our hope is to do drug-free talk radio, although I understand it’s never been done.

“Quite simply, my plan is to alter the political landscape, drive this radical right-wing president from office and stand as a beacon for ordinary Americans who work hard and play by the rules. Short of that, I’d just like to get on in Albany,“ he said.

I doubt that an AM band station out of Chicago will be something I can pick up in my car but I am going to start looking for a feed on-line just as soon as they announce the launch date. 2004 might not turn out to be so bad after all.

If you find a feed for that, please post it!  I can’t wait.

Woops, sorry Eric.  Les kindly let me know that I misattributed this entry to him in the trackback I sent.  It has been corrected.

I heard about the ‘liberal talk radio’ network within the last few weeks. So, When I saw this post, I searched around for a little more information. There are a number of internet articles, similar to the one that Eric found. They probably all stem from a news release from Progressive Media, the outfit attempting to form up the talk show network that will provide an AM outlet for Franken and others. Here are quotes from two of them.

An article in the Seattle Times provides a little bit of information about the network’s plans for entry into the market and indicates that the venture is not a sure thing.

Although its name has not been chosen, the network plans to go on the air by March or April, according to Progress Media CEO Mark Walsh. According to Walsh, the first distribution deal — a lease for round-the-clock air time at WNTD-AM (950) in Chicago — will be followed by several others in the next two weeks, likely in the New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco markets.
...
Walsh is tempering his expectations in the early going — “we expect to have a pretty decent radio product that we hope gets some ratings; our ambition is not blockbusterish,“ he said — and Progress Media expects to make a significant financial investment in the network as it attempts to expand its audience.

Unfortunately St. Louis isn’t high on the list. So, I too would be interetsed in hearing about a live feed.

The second quote is from the Seattle Post Intelligencer and is typical Franken.

Putting Franken in the midday time slot of noon to 3 p.m. Eastern time is a direct challenge to Limbaugh, whose hugely successful show occupies the same time slot.

Franken, whose earlier book was called “Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot,“ said he plans to call up his nemesis for advice on his own show since Limbaugh has often said he wonders why new radio hosts don’t seek out his counsel.

“I’ll ask him advice: how he approaches a show, how he frames an issue. If it doesn’t happen it will be - very understandably - because he won’t take my call,“ Franken said.

I can’t wait and I hope the venture succeeds.

Thanks to VernR for the extra info, although I searched for more I came up empty last night.

As for Dast attributing this to Les, no problem. I post very sporadically and am just happy if I can put something up people are interested in reading.

Well, I can’t post articles anymore due to some cookie related access problem so for those of you who are interested, Air America Radio does have a web feed here but the down side is that you need Real Player to listen to it.

I’m working on getting Eric back up and running ASAP. VernR also sent me the info on Air America as well which I’ll be posting this morning.
