Hate By State

The Southern Poverty Law Center has provided an Intelligence Project that pinpoints, state by state, hate groups in the US and the numbers surprised me. Certainly the Deep South is known for it’s Klan and Neo-Nazi groups, but nearly every state seems to have at least a few formal organizations. Check out how many are in your area. You may be surprised too.

I realize I’ve made it much easier for Moloch to locate like-minded individuals (or is that slack-minded individuals) but it’s important for the rest of us to know who’s out there too.

Only 19 in New York, and none are near where I live.  I do like that they include all hate groups, not just the typical KKK, Neo-Nazi and black separatists.  Not sure about the Jewish Defense League though.  Maybe I’ve got them confused with a more benign organization.  I took a quick look at their website and they appear to be a group dedicated to ensuring the memory of the Holocaust and outing Nazis and such.  I guess that could be taken too far and end up being just as bad too…

I think its interesting how the supposed bastion of free will and thought, i.e. California, is the state with the largest number of hate groups. I’m assuming this number is related to the high number of skin heads in and around Long Beach, but I could be wrong. Granted, Texas isn’t much better with whopping 43, but still. As for the SPLC, well, I support their work and I’m glad they include the more obscure groups. A favorite of mine happens to be the Nation of Islam. I’ve often heard talk of such horrible crimes as the Jasper Lynchings, or the Mathew Sheppard case, but there’s rarely ever a mention of the Zebra Killings or the Colin Ferguson incident in Long Island. These were incidents which the media should have jumped on and did to a certain extent. The Colin Ferguson incident was overshadowed by the O.J. Simpson trial and the Zebra Killings, well, the Zebra Killings were news when they happened but afterward they sort of faded into obscurity.

I guess IL has more problems than I thought.  And to think I even have a neo-nazi group in my home town.  I am kinda surprised I never heard of them before.

Maybe they just use that statement about remembering the Holocaust as a cover for their real batshit crazy beliefs.  Not sure, but just a guess.

Neodromos: I think its interesting how the supposed bastion of free will and thought, i.e. California, is the state with the largest number of hate groups.

Well, given that California has the largest population of all the states, it’s no small wonder that we would have the most of any group of people.

What surprises me is that there are only eight such groups in Kansas.

Well, the skinhead factor has something to do with it, but there’s also quite a few groups who (like Texas, I’d assume) are on the list because they’re anti-immigrant (read “anti-Mexican").

As someone who’s been outing it as such to anyone who’ll listen for over 20 years now, I can’t tell you how elated I am to see Lou Sheldon’s Traditional Values Coalition on the list, being called the hate group it clearly is.

In light of the number of “megachurches” and fundy media networks that have started, taken root and grown here (especially in conservative Orange County), I suppose it’s really not all that surprising that there are so many hate groups… one seems to go hand in hand with the other.

It appears that all good Christians should ask and answer the truly important question: “Who would Jesus hate?” Then they’ll receive a miraculous revelation, and join the appropriate group of like-minded people delusional psychotics.

From wikipedia:

The Jewish Defense League (JDL) is a militant Jewish organization whose purported goal is to protect Jewish people and property from anti-Semitism. The FBI considers the organization to be a “right-wing terrorist group.” [1] Mainstream Jewish groups oppose the JDL in some form, and do not associate.

Most hate groups advocate violence against there targets, so, no.

Also, we have a few Christian members here at SEB, so again, no.

Nice try though.

Well when you consider that groups like the Aryan Nation, KKK, do what they do in the name of religion, and are by majority Christian affiliated, I can see why you would think that. I am not saying all Christians are whacked, but the seed is planted when people choose to turn their complete will and thinking over to another person. Lemmings do that, they are a small rodent that over populates itself. They blindly follow each other off of ledges near the sea, and drowned themselves.

My cousin who spent quite a bit of time in CA named his daughter Aryana. I’ll let you all figure that one out. I think it’s sick. I had an old school mate that moved near camp LeJeune

and a black man would be spit on if he didn’t hold a door. After telling someone she didn’t believe in a god, my daughter was beaten and her hair pulled out all while little christians sang jesus loves you. I don’t believe in god. I am an atheist. I would not treat another human the way my daughter was treated because of what they believed in. I do NOT appreciate the fact that I was included in the assumption that Atheists are hate mongors. But hey, there’s an ass in every assumption. I may not understand their religion at times but I’m not going to beat the crap out of them for it.

Beware the beast man, for he is the Devil’s pawn. Alone among God’s primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother’s land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home, and yours. Shun him, for he is the harbinger of death.

Poking fun at weird beliefs is not a form of hate - it’s just fun poking weird beliefs.
It’s such a pity that most don’t condone freedom.

Michigan’s tally of 25 groups is depressing, but not entirely surprising. We were in the news quite a bit thanks to Timothy McVeigh’s connection with our own local rednecks known as the Michigan Militia.

Still, it’s better to know they’re there than not to.

So Cal here! You know, the ones that scare me the most are the groups with the innocuous names like the group near me American Patrol/Voice of Citizens Together. Then there’s my favorite of all the California group names White Devil Industries about 40 minutes away in my old stomping grounds, Ventura.

On the other hand, I have family in North Dakota and it surprises me that they have 0. I guess hate doesn’t like the cold weather much.

KPatrickGlover -
Doh! Wikipedia has been my best source for semi-reliable information for a long while, I don’t know why I didn’t look up the JDL there.

Anyway, I think I was somehow confusing them with the Jewish Law Institute for some odd reason.  The JDL website had a headline that basically equated to “Why we are not a terrorist organization” that should have tipped me off right quick.

The JDL, while violent and general a force of bad in the world, is *not* actually a terrorist org, at least by American standards.  There’s even a whole Executive Order (#13224) describing the process:

http://www.state.gov/s/ct/rls/fs/2002/16181.htm

I fail to find the JDL on the State Dept’s list of terrorist org’s.  Maybe i (or they) are missing something?

And…

The “Jewish Law Institute” is *not* a terrorist org.  Please get your facts correct before falsely smearing reputations.
