To be honest, i never got into that old “our State/region is more enlightned compared to them” bandwagon.

Maybe the sign is posted by some hypersensative-atheists/geek-consumerists bent on irradicating any mention of opposing concepts within their daily environments.

Did i guess right ?  In any case, trust me, ignorance is ideologically blind.  One need only read the forums of both the overly faith-addicted right and the empirically-obsessed left.

It’s time we start forgetting about regions/states or any other geographic divisions within America.

The mentality of this post is typical Americani-hilly-billy silliness—and the perfect seeding ground for even more ignorance and fear.

I guess my point is this:

By asking the question from what State was the photographed, does this post work towards eliminating fear and ignorance of different world-views—or is it merely promoting just a different flavor of overly-generalized fear and ignorance of a differing world-view ?

A quick Google search including the station call letters will reveal not only the state, but also the town within the state.  This was a bit too easy for me so I won’t ruin it for anyone else that wants to guess.

I’ve never visited the state, so I can’t make any informed comments.  However, being from Texas I wouldn’t have been surprised at all if it had come from here, even if this time we’ew not to blame.

I posted this as yet another example of the ignorance harboured in that section of the country, but there’s ignorance all over this country. (But mostly in the South).

I thought that a familiar feel to it - turns out it’s in Spindale, NC, about 70 miles from where I did my pastoral internship.  I have a more-than-passing familiarity with that area and mentality.

I had another “familiar” feeling when I read:

There’s lots of valuable stuff in rural Southern culture but an emphasis on education and cross-cultural tolerance does not figure prominently in that equation.  Think it’s a stereotype?  You could be right, maybe the dozen-or-so rural Southern communities I know well are atypical.  I refuse to feel bad about having formed an impression of another culture. 

Tolerance is a conundrum to me.  I am intolerant of discrimination but tolerant of intolerance.  That is, we have a right to see something and not like it one bit, but we don’t have a right to discriminate against others just because they are different from ourselves.

I would like to see the ancient religious texts (Bible, Koran, etc.) valued for what they are, and not worshipped as something they aren’t.

It is my front yard in Wisconsin.  I have been using the Koran’s pages for toilet paper since i ran out.  My girlfriend uses the Old Testament.

I’m sure we could find similar examples in a lot of different states as stupidity is universal. I can think of a few places in Michigan where one might find similar sentiments.

Though I must say that the reaction the folks in Afghanistan had over Newsweek’s report just gives me another reason to continue to think little of the Islamic religion. Stupid sentiments and stupid reactions to them. So much for the unifying power of religious belief.
