Florida Senate passes misnamed “Academic Freedom Act.”

Seems they have a few IDiots in the Florida Senate that are hoping to have the non-theory of Intelligent Design taught in schools. After recent revisions by the Florida board of education put in place a stronger emphasis on teaching the theory of evolution the politicos sprang into action:

TALLAHASSEE, FL—Teachers are one step closer being able to openly criticize the theory of evolution in the classroom.

In a vote of 21 to 17, Florida’s State Senators adopted the evolution education bill, also known as the “Academic Freedom Act.”

[...] One subject facing scrutiny is the in-depth teaching of evolution.

State Senator Ronda Storms sponsored the legislation that would allow teachers to teach theories that contradict the theory of evolution.

The problem, of course, is that there aren’t any legitimate theories that contradict the theory of evolution. Intelligent Design certainly isn’t a theory as it makes no predictions nor does it contribute anything to science. It’s just a security blanket for people hung up on an ancient work of fiction who don’t like their cherished beliefs being crushed by reality.

The sad part is Florida is one of the states we had considered as a possible destination if the economy in Michigan continues to blow chunks. Anne could probably land a teaching job and word has it there’s plenty of technical jobs around Orlando and Tampa. If the winds of fate do end up blowing us that way then at least I can take comfort in the fact that Courtney will have graduated from high school by then.

I’ve just been watching Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss on YouTube.  Krauss comments that something good has finally come out of Florida. A law was passed (this one?) that requires it to be called the ‘THEORY of evolution’ BUT they also have to refer to the ‘THEORY of gravity’, so it seems like some one ‘gets it’.

It’s quotes like that and the insightful and well thought out posts that make me stop by stupid evil bastard on a daily basis, though usually it’s more like several times a day.  Keep up the funnies and the great work Les!

Oh, and had y’all considered Texas?  Dallas has plenty of technical jobs and the schools down here always seem to be hurting for teachers.  Though I figure it might pain you to live in a red state.

I don’t know how they expect to change what happens in the classroom with some legislation.  The kids are predisposed to religious answers before school starts, and plenty of teachers here are ready to re-enforce that.

Oh yeah, we’re facing a several hundred million education budget cut this year, I’m really glad the political class found time in their busy, productive schedule to create a linguistic tightrope act that very few teachers will pay any attention to.

Legislation and what actually happens in the classroom are two different matters.

Here in Texas, it’s nearly impossible to teach all that’s on the curriculum and many teachers conveniently time it so that they never make it to evolution at all. On the up side, there are students who don’t let school get in the way of their education.

Yeah, teachers are usually too busy prepping students for the TAKS tests.  But that’s a whole other topic.

I can’t believe I’m the first person here to say that Ronda Storms sounds like a porn name.

Though I’m scared for myself and my children during the upcoming chaos. Reading crap like this makes me frankly glad that the American Empire is collapsing, and that we are about to have our fat-illiterate-quivering asses handed to us on an made in China platter!

Hey less, you should move down here to SC. We are in need of teachers AND we have a Google headquarters, as well as needing tech people out in Charleston.

Just a thought.

Nah, you need to move over here to England!. America’s beginning to seem like a bit of a lost cause when it comes to reason, but if they lost all the atheists (and from what i’ve seen of this site so far, if it became wider known then you would be leading a pretty large proportion of us) then the American economy would pretty much grind to a halt, as most of the internet would go down and nobody would get up off their arse on sundays except to go to church!

Mwahahahaha! The solution to all the worlds ills!

BTW, I’m new to posting on this site, though I have been lurking around the religion section for a while, so tell me if i do anything too embarrasing!
Also, congrats, this site is AWESOME!

Creationism seems to make inroads to the U.K. and the Brits are a lost cause when it comes to multi-culturalism. And surveillance. And photography in public. And…

I’m still salivating over our time in London more than ten years ago and don’t get me gushing about the Highlands up north, but I’m less receptive to the idea of moving to Britain again one of these years than I used to be.
