Five years since 9/11 and the MSM is orgasmic about it.

So it’s been five years since the events that took place on September 11th, 2001 and the media is short stroking it for all they can today. The morning news was almost non-stop treacly 9/11 content and that’s only because they couldn’t figure out how to work it into the weather and traffic reports. The folksy guitar music they kept playing before each commercial break was so bad it almost sent me into insulin shock. Needless to say I’m not going to be watching much TV today.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the enormity of the events that took place five years ago or the impact it had on the nation in general, and the people directly involved in particular, but I’m not much on spending a lot of time on past tragedies when there are plenty of problems in the here and now that could use our attention. It also doesn’t help my cynicism at all that so many politicians have turned it into a political football to kick around in an attempt to justify all manner of wrongs from the Iraq war to the Patriot Act.

So this is all I’m going to write about it today. It’s certainly fresh enough in everyone’s mind that it’s the last thing I need to comment much on and if you’re a regular then you’ve already read my past writings about it and know where I stand (and if you don’t know then there’s always the archives). Enough other people will be wallowing in the date that I don’t feel the need to bother. I have other things to spend my energy on.

It’s not about wallowing Les.  It’s about rememberance of those involved.  Worth a read http://edcone.typepad.com/wordup/2006/09/what_has_not_ch.html

To die one’s self is a thing that must be easy, & light of consequence; but to lose a part of one’s self--well, we know how deep that pang goes, we who have suffered that disaster, received that wound which cannot heal.

I for one cannot believe that it’s been five years. Where did that time go?

There’s still time to change the road you’re on.

I disagree, Consi, at least in regards to the majority of news items that are saturating the airwaves today. Those are almost entirely about wallowing.

Beyond that for almost every heartfelt entry like the one you linked to there will be five more that will be little more than wallowing for the people writing them. I suppose if that’s what works for them then so be it, but that doesn’t mean I have to join in on it.

Everyone’s going to handle this in their own way personally and on their weblogs, and that’s as it should be.  But I agree with Les’ assessment of the MSM approach.  It’s almost as if they are obligated to pump high-fructose corn syrup into the airwaves all day.

Well, for something rather different—and perhaps quite disturbing, CBC’s “The Passionate Eye” is showing a documentary tonight called, “The Falling Man.”

Some of you will remember that there was at least one photo taken of a man falling/jumping from the WTC—the photo was demonized and banned and then pulled from the papers and disappeared. The documentary is about the photo, the journalist who took the photo and his discovery of the man’s identity.

One more thing about 9/11 that I came across that I thought interesting—It was a quote in the Toronto Star in an Article by Rosie DiManno—She asks what the world would look like if 9/11 had not happened, and quotes the speculations of a science fiction writer (Robert J. Sawyer):

There’s little chance George Bush would have been re-elected. He went from being the guy who stole the presidency by chicanery to being a comander-in-chief who had to be blindly obeyed, thanks to 9/11.

Because of 9/11, we got Homeland Security and the loss of civil liberties, the ill-conceived war in Iraq, the resulting devastation of the US dollar on world markets, three-dollar-a-gallon gasoline, ineffectual ariport security measures and the curtailing of stem-cell research that ultimately might have otherwise saved millions of lives.

The White House is in denial about global warming and creationists are getting more and more powerful. All of that is because 9/11 let Bush—an apocalyptist who honestly doesn’t believe that we have to worry about the long-term—be re-elected.” [quote/]
