A Nigerian-born father of two boys, living in the UK, felt that since God had his tongue cut off in the Bible, he must inflict similar injuries on his sons. He put pins in their tongues and through their lips, cut their mouths with scalpel blades, and pressing one of the boy’s tongue with sharp pliers until it swelled and bled.

It went to court, and he was found guilty of three counts of child cruelty. He pleaded not guilty; his wife also pleaded not guilty to essentially turning a blind eye to the cruelty. They await sentencing and a verdict on further charges.

10 to 1 odds say that father did more for getting those kids to really look at how bizarre religion is then in making them any kind of “true believers”.

Still, religious man or not, I’m gonna have to say this one falls into the plain ‘ole crazy category for me.

I can’t wait to see this episode on extreme religious wife swap next week.  I wonder who gets stoned to death this week!

I will take those odds. The problem in our society is we tend to take what we hear from adults as gospel. Our society puts a lot of value on elders and listening and trusting them. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing because sometimes that trust is important. The experience an adult has may lead them to look both ways before crossing and pass that message down. The child would be wise to listen to the adult.

Unfortunately we allow this trust to extend to issues such as this one and religion in general. I had friends when I was younger that believed because their mommy said she did. It never really made much sense to me as I grew up in a fairly secular household.

Lets just say I have faith in the trust children put in their parents wisdom, and the excuses the parents make may be enough to hold onto the beliefs. I hope I’m wrong.

LOL I saw a commercial for that. Thanks for the reminder I’m going to have to look it up.

It was alleged the father told the boys he inflicted the injuries because God had his tongue cut off in the Bible.

I’m not familiar with the verse and chapter where God gets his tongue cut out, but he’s probably not reading from a Bible the rest of us could read anyway.  In any event, by that logic, perhaps they should whip the shit out of him, then force him to drag a heavy ass cross to a hill where they will then proceed to nail him up to the damn thing, stab him in the ribs, and then leave him there for the crows to feast upon.

I’m fine with him getting the insanity plea so long as he gets to emulate Jesus. He might be crazy enough to think he’ll rise from the dead in 3 days too, but I’m not worried that it would happen.

The thing that I hate the most about all of this is that all the other Ivory dagger worshippers will pass off this guy as “not a true Christian” and plead ignorance till their dying day.  If only we could deliver it to them and spare the rest of us their presence....

I have to agree with you Bog Brother; though I’ve never read the Bible (by that I mean the one used by Anglican Protestants, my religion before I turned to atheism) I can’t remember that ever being in it.

I think you’re right in saying that if it is in ‘The Bible’ it’s not a copy that most Christians are familiar with. There are some, shall we say, ‘interesting’ churches in Africa and I’m wondering if this man was a follower of one while he was in Nigeria.

I’ll try to let you guys know the outcome of the sentencing, if I come across it; Bradford is my home town (where the offences and trial took place) so I’ll monitor the local press. Though I think it’s obvious that he’ll be going to jail for some time.

And so will I.  He’s a nut.

I am not familiar with any verse in the Bible where God got his tongue cut out.  Pretty sure I’d remember that.

Yeah, religion is sooo not a healthy activity for the terminally insane. Or for those around them.

I’m pretty sure this guy’s religion had something to do with all this, but in the same way it does for everyone else - as an excuse for anything you want to do.

Just an update; though they will not formally sentenced until March, the father has been told to expect at least 10 years in jail and possibly a life term: http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/newsindex/display.var.1989831.0.tyrant_dad_may_never_be_freed.php

The mother will also get a ‘substantial’ prison sentence.
