The arguments have been long excised on this site, plus others like Talk Origins. We don’t go through them everytime a creationist says something stupid - such as ‘the bible said it so it must be true’.  When discussing a football game do you start by first discussing the rules and history?

After having read a good number of his books with the outlandish claims he makes I’ll have to disagree with your assessment that he’s not an idiot. He most certainly is.

Two facts that prove absolutely nothing other than he managed to get a job as a science teacher—which is NOT the same thing as being a scientist—and he likes to read science books. Neither fact has anything to do with the truth of the claims he makes or whether or not he’s an idiot. I’ve known a couple of science teachers in my time that were idiots.

I’ve seen his DVDs and I’ve read several of his books so, yes, I can say quite a bit about the man. I’ve also looked into his credentials and learned that his degree is from an unaccredited Christian college and had nothing to do with Biology or science. His claim of having a doctorate is dubious at best considering the nature of the university that gave it to him.

I haven’t seen as many of Ron Wyatt’s videos as I have Hovinds, but I’m not impressed by the ones I have seen.

Now here’s a question for you: How many books on Evolution written by actual scientists have you read? Have you devoted as much time to the people who are leading researchers into the Theory of Evolution as you’ve devoted to the Christian nutcases? Or are the nutcases your only source?

I suspect the latter is true.

As best I can tell, your position is “Nunt-uh, Hovind was a teach and has a wicked big collection of books.” But it could be “I was so stoned one night that a Hovind video made sense to me.” Neither are very persuasive.  No wonder Les was laughing his ass off at you.

Given good reason to change I’d be more than willing to do so. Again, anyone who’s been around long enough (or read through the archives) can see where I’ve changed a number of times. I was once a True Believer and over time I changed to an Atheist.

You implied as much in your comments. Clearly you at least accept that belief system as correct if you have resigned yourself to going to hell and think that Dr. Hovind is a scientific genius. Considering that there’s plenty of people who do call themselves Christians and still live life in the manner you claim to live it that’s good enough to get you in the club as far as I’m concerned.

No one like to be told that what they do or think is wrong because that would show that there is such a thing as morality. People cannot stomach things that expose their belief as failure and they will then turn away while scoffing at it. Psychology shows that these actions are part of a defence mechinism to sustaining ones moral. The same kind of action as one would give when they illegally run a red light at an intersetion while flipping you off for honking at them. If you Google search “dr. Hovind” you will see many sites using this same type of defense mechinism. It even shows up in wikipedia because the subjects definitions and explainations there are submitted by majority rank, and many people can’t stand to hear him, because they don’t want to know or feel that what they think could be wrong. After this post, many people would love to get personal and attack using name calling or generality comments about believers or bible thumpers while avoiding the facts.
1. “Science” is not evolution and the belief structure for evolution is on the same line as religion, therefore remove the proven lies about it out of the tax funded schools and rather insert it into private funded schools just like you would with any other religion.
2. You can believe what you want, just don’t force it to people as “truth” from a “theory”.

Try google searching “dr. hovind” and go to the video section and watch his debates with evolution professors. Make your free choices after that or use your defense mechinism right now.

Okie dokie, Alexander- I’ve watched “Dr.” Hovind’s debates with evolution professors, and I’ve made my free choice:  Hovind doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and the professors do.

You’re right about people scoffing at things they don’t want to think about.  We all want to believe that our own worldview is correct, and it takes courage to honestly face challenges to our beliefs.  However, sometimes people scoff at things, not because they don’t want to face them, but because they have faced them and they have seen through them, and seen that they are false.  Now, I don’t scoff at all beliefs I know are false- I don’t accost children in the street and say “Guess what- there’s no Tooth Fairy! Buahaha!” But when adults hold false ideas, and moreover try to get these false ideas into public schools, then scoffing (and legal challenges) are in order.

This is the case with our scoffing at “Dr.” Hovind.  Now, if you’re predisposed to believe in the Bible, and don’t know much about evolution, you might well be impressed by Hovind- he’s a charismatic speaker, and pretty funny.  I bet he would be a nice guy to chat with at a barbecue.  But if you have taken the trouble to learn something about how science works, and examined the evidence for evolution, the conclusion is inescapable: evolution is a fact, and Hovind doesn’t know jack about it.

Also- If you don’t want evolution taught in public schools because it is a “theory”, then you should insist that gravity not be taught either- it is also a “theory”.  But both evolution and gravity are facts as well as theories.  In science, “theory” doesn’t have the common folk meaning “unsubstantiated speculation”, but rather means “a structure of ideas that explains facts”.  Wikipedia has a nice article about the creation-evolution debate you might check out.  Cheers, zilch

What cracks me up most about these Hovind defenders is the fact that they often exhibit the very psychological defense mechanisms they accuse others of employing against Hovind’s claims.

I believe, if I recall from my college psychology courses years ago correctly, that’s known as “projection.”

I believe what he says is true. if someone could sow me some solid facts for evolution. then i would believe it but as of right now there is more proof for creation.  Some one show me some proof please.
