Long time SEB favorite whipping boy “Dr.” Kent Hovind has been on trial for tax fraud over the past few weeks, which most of you probably already know if you’ve been following along on Pharyngula. Well the trial is finally over and the good “Dr.” and his wife have been found guilty of tax fraud that could land them in prison for a very long time:

Kent Hovind is charged with 58 federal counts, including failure to pay $845,000 in employee-related taxes and withholdings.

If found guilty, he faces a maximum of 288 years in prison. His wife, Jo Hovind, faces up to 225 years. Her charges include aiding and abetting her husband with 44 counts of evading bank-reporting requirements.

Doh! Seems the good “Dr.” would’ve benefited from less time studying the Bible and more time studying up on U.S. tax laws.

I’ve written many times in the past about what a total whack job the good “Dr.” is and my utter amazement that anyone actually takes anything he says seriously because it’s obvious after only a few minutes of listening to him that he’s more than a few cards short of a full deck. This became even more apparent during the course of his trial when he made all sorts of idiotic claims in an attempt to justify years of not paying taxes of any kind. A small sample follows:

In closing arguments this morning, Alan Richey, Kent Hovind’s defense attorney, said the Pensacola evangelist was never notified by the IRS that he was violating a specific law by not withholding and paying employment taxes on workers at the Dinosaur Adventure Land and Creative Science Evangelism, both of which he founded and operates.

Hovind also believes that as workers of God, he and all employees of the theme park and his ministry are exempt from paying taxes.

It’s a shame when reality conflicts with one’s beliefs. All too often, as “Dr.” Kent Hovind has just discovered, reality wins. On the plus side for Hovind it’s looking like we won’t have the good “Dr.” to kick around much longer. Of the bat shit crazy evangelists he was definitely my favorite.

I don’t think these people are name calling. It’s just funny stuff! We like to call Hovind a hack...but he hoodwinked thousands of God loving Christians out of MILLIONS of dollars using “used car salesman” tactics, and slick packaging to the ignorant masses.  It’s hilarious!  If he had just been a little smarter, (maybe had a real PHD or something) he could have profitted off the church for the rest of his life. Glad to hear they locked him up.
He’s probably changed his view of Roman’s 1, and homosexuality by now I’d imagine.

Hmm… Was Dr Hovind right to evade taxes?  No.

Is he right about what a joke Evolution is?  Yep.

I do think the title of your page is appropriate:

Stupid - yep, good start
Evil - you said it, not me
Bastard - Fatherless.

Again, you named it, not me. But hey, at lest you are honest about yourself!

Crikey!  It’s a rare, self-righteous, drive-by troll!  Quick, get the camera before he gets away!

Not only doesn’t Mickey understand Evolution, but he doesn’t understand the title of the blog either. Typical.

Hmph.  Dunno how you can call evolution a “joke”, except that it’s funny watching self-involved, childish ‘tards get their panties in a bunch at the mere suggestion that they might not be the center of the Universe.  I have more respect for someone who still snuggles with their teddy bear to get them through the night than I do anyone who believes in creationism.  I swear, they get more pathetic every day.

Memo to Mikey:  I paid a little visit to the grave of Reverend Darwin about a month ago.  The British have no problem with him resting alongside a bunch of other greats like Newton in one of their holiest places (Westminster Abbey).  If they could manage that during the oh-so-sanctimonious Victorian era, WTF is wrong with your ability to firewall science and religion?

None of this information is true! You obviously have not studied the Christian lifestyle but I certainly hope you do! Kent Hovind did NOT stop paying his taxes.

Kent Hovind did NOT stop paying his taxes.

You are quite correct Christian! He did not stop paying them since he’d have to start paying them first.

I’ve often wondered how I can be a “godless heretic” when those who call me that are Christians.

Come on folks, Hovind wasn’t worth the time given him the first time around. It’s now a year later, get a life!!!!!!

None of this information is true! You obviously have not studied the Christian lifestyle but I certainly hope you do!

Oh, you mean that the self-serving (and rather often hatemongering antics) of Pat Robertson, Oral Roberts, Oral Roberts’ kids and grandkids, Jim & Tammy Faye, Ted Haggard, Coy Previtt, James Dobson, et. al. aren’t supposed to be instructional?  Ann Coulter calls herself a Christian--doesn’t the gold cross above the V-neck of her little black dress prove it?  So does Tom Delay.  Bill “Blackjack” Bennett is Christian enough to lecture other people on character when he can’t get a gambling monkey off his back.

Oh, we’ve “studied” Christian lifestyles, alright.  Plenty of material in the news to go on.

Frankly, when people start banging on about their faith, I inwardly roll my eyes b/c that just screams “Bull$#!+” Just like anybody rabbiting on about how great their sex life is.  No difference in my mind....

So what are you out to prove? Did you know Dr. Hovind personally? Why are you out to discredit him?

Christian: “So what are you out to prove? Did you know Dr. Hovind personally? Why are you out to discredit him?”

Hovind discredited himself by his actions.  Pointing to those actions is after the fact.

The whole point is not that Christianity makes people bad, but that it doesn’t make people good.  The supposed ethical superiority of Christians is a myth with serious political consequences.

I met Jesus a few years back, I was traveling through Mexico with some friends and in one of the small towns we passed through we decided to get some food.  After a little looking around we settled on Jesus’s Taco Stand.  While I might not agree with all of Jesus’s policy’s I will have to say that he makes a damn fine soft burrito.  The burrito’s were only about $1.50 so I tipped Jesus $4 for the awesome burrito’s and we were on our way again.  My only regret was that I didn’t have a camera on me, but then again isn’t that how it always is when you stumble across Jesus in a small Mexican town selling inexpensive quality burritos?

Christians don’t think they are ‘superior’. People do make mistakes.

You need to get one thing through your head: Christianity is presented as an external marker of ethical suitability.

Deny smug Christian arrogance all you want, but try running for president today without it!  There has been a change since the days when a Christian candidate could even mention separation of Church and State.

christian:So what are you out to prove? Did you know Dr. Hovind personally? Why are you out to discredit him?

I certainly know him as a person, but I certainly get suspicious from some of what I hear

People make mistakes. That’s why God gave his son for us. He died for us so we wouldn’t be spending eternity in hell. God gave his son’s life for our second chances

You think that him taking responsibility for our sins was a good thing? The victim suffers and the sinner/offender gets no punishment, so learn nothing.

By all means, a forgiving god should give people a second chance, but only after their punishment, otherwise nothing good came out of it.

And anyhow, how did Jesus dying earn forgiveness for us? I see no reason why a god should look at that and bless the excecutioners.

Christians don’t think they are ‘superior’.

Some do, some don’t, as with all groups.
You cannot speak for a whole category of people, because they are not all like you.
