“Dr.” Kent Hovind and wife guilty of tax fraud. Get free trip to PMITA prison.

Long time SEB favorite whipping boy “Dr.” Kent Hovind has been on trial for tax fraud over the past few weeks, which most of you probably already know if you’ve been following along on Pharyngula. Well the trial is finally over and the good “Dr.” and his wife have been found guilty of tax fraud that could land them in prison for a very long time:

Kent Hovind is charged with 58 federal counts, including failure to pay $845,000 in employee-related taxes and withholdings.

If found guilty, he faces a maximum of 288 years in prison. His wife, Jo Hovind, faces up to 225 years. Her charges include aiding and abetting her husband with 44 counts of evading bank-reporting requirements.

Doh! Seems the good “Dr.” would’ve benefited from less time studying the Bible and more time studying up on U.S. tax laws.

I’ve written many times in the past about what a total whack job the good “Dr.” is and my utter amazement that anyone actually takes anything he says seriously because it’s obvious after only a few minutes of listening to him that he’s more than a few cards short of a full deck. This became even more apparent during the course of his trial when he made all sorts of idiotic claims in an attempt to justify years of not paying taxes of any kind. A small sample follows:

In closing arguments this morning, Alan Richey, Kent Hovind’s defense attorney, said the Pensacola evangelist was never notified by the IRS that he was violating a specific law by not withholding and paying employment taxes on workers at the Dinosaur Adventure Land and Creative Science Evangelism, both of which he founded and operates.

Hovind also believes that as workers of God, he and all employees of the theme park and his ministry are exempt from paying taxes.

It’s a shame when reality conflicts with one’s beliefs. All too often, as “Dr.” Kent Hovind has just discovered, reality wins. On the plus side for Hovind it’s looking like we won’t have the good “Dr.” to kick around much longer. Of the bat shit crazy evangelists he was definitely my favorite.

Les I would normally never go on your site and tell someone to look at mine, but they just executed Saddam and I think I even out-did myself on this one. (I think I’m some sort of sick bastard!) BUT come right back!!!

Sadie: I don’t mourn the passing of the son-of-a-bitch, but death by hanging strikes me as a bit...medieval.

Yes, the death penalty carried out in any form upon anyone is decidedly uncivilised.

Some years ago I read a fairly violent book called Davo’s Little Something
http://www.robertgbarrett.com.au/robertgbarrett/books/davos_little_something.htm
by Oz ‘awthor’ Robert G Barrett - and yes KPG, he’s as easy to read as Rob Parker.

Anyway, Davo goes on a revenge crusade and eventually finds, but doesn’t kill, the boss skinhead of the group who murdered his mate.
From memory, he removed his eyes, cut out his tongue, deafened him and, I think, cut off his hands after telling him why it was happening.

I’m not saying this should have happened to Saddam but hanging was too quick and easy for him.

Bob’s ‘Les Norton’ books are much funnier and entertaining but like Rob Parker’s books, there aren’t enough of them.

I’m usually anti-death penalty, but I’m willing to make exceptions for people like Saddam. Even so, hanging seems awfully excessive in this day and age.

The problem with a grusome death is that it amplifies the martyrdom of the criminal without actually increasing the net justice.  And it certainly wouldn’t deter other dictators.

Animaniac’s’ Wakko Warner to Saddam Hussein: “Should we call you ‘Dick’, or just ‘Mr. Tator’?”

Sorry, just had to throw that in there.  Anyway, it’s probably better he goes out with a whimper.  Breathing pure argon, perhaps… unconscious in five seconds, dead in two minutes.

Jeez, DoF, that Dick Tator joke took me more than a minute to get coz I focused on, and therefore thought, it was an in joke with the reference to ”Animaniac’s’ Wakko Warner “ of which I have never heard.
Good one.  LOL

Sorry ‘bout that, LJ!  Animaniacs is one of my favorite cartoons.  However I am guilty of misrepresenting them.  After writing that comment, I realized it was probably Yakko, not Wakko, who addressed Hussein that way.

DoF: I realized it was probably Yakko, not Wakko,

And that would have made all the difference, yes? LOL

Moses: You into the bong again????

I wish ... but it gives me a nice little segue into ...

DaDAH!!
It’s my 60th birthday tomorrow (to be pedantic @ 4.20 AM) and tonite @ midnight I plan to have my last cigarette.
I’ve been saying to me, myself and I, for a few years now that if we made it to 60 we’ll cease being a slave to the weed.
I suppose it’ll be as hard as I want to make it.  smile

Tamara, I believe you too celebrate your birthday on my birthday (NY’sDay) so, Happy Birthday, Tamara.
(Jeez, I hope my memory hasn’t played me for a fool again.  smile )
Isn’t it wonderful that most of the western world celebrates our birthday ... with bells and whistles, fireworks and beer - it was a bummer when I was a kid though - mum and dad didn’t want to get up early enough … and the number of times I missed out cos I’d already received a xmas/birthday present combined.  LOL

Hope y’all have a good, interesting and lucky 2007 - eventful enough to excite you but not eventful enough to irreparably damage you.  wink

The Talmud: Never expose yourself unnecessarily to danger; a miracle may not save you ... and if it does, it will be deducted from your share of luck or merit.
I’ll be keeping that one in mind.  LOL

Happy birthday, LJ!!!  Congratulations!

And that would have made all the difference, yes?

Some. As the theme song goes,

“...Dot is cute and Yakko yakks,
Wakko packs away the snacks,
while Bill Clinton plays the sax,
we’re Animaaaaniacs!”

Congrats, John, on the big six-oh! Hope you have a good one. You too, Tamara. And speaking of birthdays, my sister Theresa will be twenty-one on January 4. Everyone’s growing up, it seems.

To address Allan’s inquiry, our new hookah is my current pride and joy. It’s lovely to look at yet deliciously tacky, and best of all it gives us license to have a themed New Year’s party.

I’m a born again Christian.  However, I’ll say that Kent was acting like a hypocrite.  He failed to carry out what Christ said about giving Ceasar what is his (taxes).  He abused what a “worker of God” really is when it comes to being paid.  He made excuses in court.  He has a very distorted view on what taxes really are.

However, you need to know true Biblical context before you and your readers start to quote from the Bible.  What we know of the Bible is obviously a translation and a copy...but God, according to His Word has preserved it for thousands of years and will continue to do so until Christ comes again.  Most of you have no respect and no class.  Grow up.

Drew: good for you for recognizing Hovind’s hypocrisy- he’s still, inexplicably, a hero to many Christians.

However, I don’t get what you say about the Bible.  Many of us here know its context pretty well, so why shouldn’t we quote it?  And what do you mean by saying that “God, according to His Word has preserved it for thousands of years”?  Do you mean that God has the original manuscripts stashed away somewhere?  Just curious.

Gee, Drew, where to begin?

However, you need to know true Biblical context before you and your readers start to quote from the Bible.

Speaking of not knowing context, you have apparently not troubled to get to know the author or any of the regulars here before making such a sweeping statement.

What we know of the Bible is obviously a translation and a copy...but God, according to His Word has preserved it for thousands of years and will continue to do so until Christ comes again.

Wait - the book itself says it’s true?  Doesn’t mean diddly; it’s a claim, made within the book.  Veracity cannot be verified by claims.

To paraphrase the old joke; “Those who love sausage and who love scripture should avoid learning how either is made.”

Most of you have no respect and no class.  Grow up.

Dropping in on a forum of which you apparently know nothing, and making a statement like that, is not exactly classy in itself, Drew.  You want respect for your religion and your book, but they’re not respectable.  The book is full of errors and lies - and some good stuff too - and your religion bends itself into a pretzel to pretend it’s all good stuff.

Respect is just blindly accepting what you’re told? Refusing to change?
Where.T.F does class come into this?

I don’t know enough about the Hovind trial to say he used quotes from the bible or not.
The point is that none of it would be admissable because it’s all “hearsay” evidence!

What DOF said. Expecting your religion to be treated with kid gloves while cherry-picking through our words ain’t exactly classy or mature.
