Dick DeVos just lost my vote.

Up until this morning I hadn’t completely ruled out voting for Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos this November in part because I’m not entirely happy with Michigan’s current governor, Jennifer Granholm. Most of what DeVos’ campaign commercials have been about is the need to create more jobs in Michigan, which is pretty much a given these days, but there’s been little mention about other policies or issues.

What’s finally convinced me that he’d be a bad choice for governor are the news reports this morning that DeVos feels Intelligent Design should be taught in science classrooms:

“Lots of intelligent people can disagree about the origins of life. In the end, I believe in our system of local control,” he said in a news release Wednesday afternoon. “Local school boards should have the opportunity to offer evolution and intelligent design in their curriculums.”

DeVos said exposing students to the concept of intelligent design—viewed by most scientists as a nonscientific, religion-based belief—would help them analyze competing theories.

I figured if I waited long enough he’d eventually come up with a reason for me to not vote for him and now he has. Congrats Mr. DeVos, you’ve lost my vote.

Just curious Les, what is that that makes you unhappy with Jennifer Granholm?

September 14, 2006

This week, I was happy to visit with some of the 21st Century Jobs Fund award recipients across Michigan.  The fund is a $2 billion, 10-year initiative that will accelerate the diversification of Michigan’s economy and create jobs. The initiative focuses on growing and attracting jobs in the high-growth sectors of life sciences, alternative energy, advanced automotive materials and manufacturing, and homeland security.

I agree completely, this is more of DeVos being out of touch with the mainstream.  Is this Dick’s way of educating kids to compete in the global economy he knows and loves?

I defintely agree with Governor Granholm on this one, that intelligent design has no part in science curriculum but can be discussed as part of current events or a comparitive religion class.

Actually, my impression is that this was just a political sop to the conservatives, not something he clearly believes in himself.  Not that that makes it any better.

Wouldn’t surprise me.  The world would be a much different place if politicians truly spoke their minds and ran for the best interest of the people.

The stuff he definitely believes in himself is bad enough.

I’m surprised anyone is surprised.
De Vos has his finger firmly on the pulse of the American voter.
Zilch pointed me here yesterday whilst responding to Al. Thanks Zilch. I enjoyed the ride from one site to another - I’m an information sponge - just wish I could remember some of it.  smile

Wiki: A study published by the journal Science in August 2006 reported that the United States had the second lowest acceptance of evolution among 34 developed countries (Turkey was first). It also reported that the number of adults who were unsure about their stand on human evolution had risen from 7% to 21% in the past 20 years; the number of adults who accept human evolution had dropped from 45% to 40% over the past 20 years, and the number of adults who overtly reject human evolution had dropped from 48% to 39%. Reasons cited for the low acceptance of evolution were “widespread fundamentalism” and “politicization of science"[

As you can see, xianity has increased its hold on the American psyche over the last 20 years.

The list of Developed countries: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Republic of China (Taiwan), United Kingdom, United States, Vatican City (Holy See);
As well as the following territories: Bermuda (United Kingdom), Faroe Islands (Denmark), Hong Kong (People’s Republic of China), Macau (People’s Republic of China)

I know Turkey doesn’t appear in that list but if you Ctrl F in the Dev Counties’ site you’ll see it.

Mostly I’m unhappy with her slow response to Michigan’s crappy economy/jobs problem, but I’m also still pissed she wasted time and taxpayer money on a video game law that everyone knew was likely to be overturned by the courts. It was a stupid law designed to pander to voters frightened of video games and nothing more.

bummer, just found out we have another 4 years with Granholm. As always, despite the fact that I disagree with having her as my governer, I will continue to pray for her to exercise wisdom and that our Mighty God would protect her. Instead of complaining about our fellow man and woman in office we should pray and support them regardless of the fact that we may not agree with everything they do. It sure is easy to critique and put down those working out there while we sit on the other side. What would we do if given the opportunity? complain or produce positive results in life? God bless and thansk for reading this.

It seems that Naudia needs a new keyboard as hers has a stuck CAPS LOCK.  Also, somebody needs to pass her a small silver tray filled with a nice selection of benzodiazepines in tiny foil cups.

See, now if you just made these changes to the quote (in bold):

DeVos said, “Exposing students to the concept of intelligent design—viewed by most scientists as a nonscientific, religion-based belief—would help them analyze competing theories.

I would totally agree with it. I don’t see anything wrong with Intelligent Design being discussed in school, as long as it’s presented in the same way as flat earth theory. It could even be used legitimately in an introductory science class, as a way of teaching kids about the scientific method and how words like “theory” mean something different in science than they do in the vernacular. But somehow I doubt that would appease Christian conservatives.

I totaly disagree, intellagent design can help alot in life… I’m doing a Senior Essay on weather it should be taught as a class! My oppion is that it should! It’s not a crime! We as U.S citizens have the right to learn and get an education! why not start with our reilgion? Not everyone feels that they shouldn’t be able to learn about their religion! It’s nice to know how you ansestors were raised! For those who don’t like going to church can learn & try to understand the facts of reiligon in school!

Wow, those were a couple strange comments left back to back…

Brandy, you are free to teach religion in private schools.  But since we have church and state separate, you need to keep religion out of public schools.  If you invite in one religion, then you gotta invite them all in.  Which means we can finally teach the truth.

Brandy- nothing personal, but you might want to work on your spelling and grammar before you start spreading the gospel in public schools.  Maybe Nicole can help you, if she can take time off her wedding preparations.  tongue wink

Absolutely. ID doesn’t belong into the science classroom, but it’s appropriate to teach in a religion class—always assuming the creationists can figure out if the earth is flat, how old the earth is, and whether or not they can agree to theistic evolution.

Of course, in the U.S. religion classes are limited to private schools. I can just image the bloodbath between the different Christian denominations alone if they had to agree on a curriculum in public schools.

By the way, teaching ID in a science class is a crime, figuratively and perhaps literally.

Zilch, thank you for pointing out that Brandy’s right to get an education has been violated.

Why don’t we fund schools to a degree so that all kids can get a grip on grammar, spelling, math, critical thinking, and problem solving skills and postpone the IDolatry debate until then?

Webs, you are in danger of being excommunicated for spreading false false gods. It’s bad enough Christians doing it with their false false God. Please stick to the one true false God.
Frankly the only reason I haven’t defrocked you already is I need to say the following

Brother Webs- apply the Censor of Censure to Brandi. And buy her a book on grammar and spelling.

PS Nicole- I assume we are all invited. I like a good fruity Red wine with my food. I’ll do the ceremony and you can be married as a Jenkian by a Pope.

Brandi… as summoned by the high Pope himself and given out by the Knight Deacon of the Censure Censor you are to learn how to use a word processor to check spelling and grammatical errors of typed documents.  The Knight Deacon would buy a book, but he understands how money is easily wasted on non believers of the one true mighty God - Jenkins.

Plus the Knight Deacon is kinda poor and understands that money funnels into religions through a powerful intermediary called a Church.  And the all knowing and powerful Jenkins has not yet given word to build such device.
