On our recent trip to through the southwest (Las Vegas and the Four Corners states), we purposely planned our route so we’d get to drive along Route 666, which we thought would be really cool.
Much to our surprise, they’ve actually changed the name of Route 666—it’s now Route 491! Boy did that suck.
And yes, it was apparently renamed because of ridiculous superstitions. The strange thing is, according to this site, it was the Native Americans who complained about the symbolic meaning of 666—er, do they actually believe in biblical numerology? Weird.
Yeah, we’ve covered this highway here before. That entry is from back in 2002.

I have a picture of myself posed next to one of the 666 signs somewhere around here. I wish I could get my hands on one of the old signs for my studio.

Just for the record, this one was taken in Zaneville, Ohio. Having spent a frustratung several hours in the city that day, not only was this sign the high point of my day, but it was all very apropos!

I know this is an old thread, but I just ran across the image I spoke of up there. I don’t remember what state this was (it was a month long photo shoot where we traveled all over the country), but I think it was in New Mexico or Colorado. Enjoy.
