Desperate for some sort of legacy, Bush makes capturing Osama Bin Laden a priority.

Get Osama Bin Laden before I leave office, orders George W Bush - Times Online

President George W Bush has enlisted British special forces in a final attempt to capture Osama Bin Laden before he leaves the White House.

Defence and intelligence sources in Washington and London confirmed that a renewed hunt was on for the leader of the September 11 attacks. “If he [Bush] can say he has killed Saddam Hussein and captured Bin Laden, he can claim to have left the world a safer place,” said a US intelligence source.

After seven years all I can say is that it’s about fucking time Bush made Osama Bin Laden a priority. Just think of how much money and resources he would’ve had available to him if he hadn’t had a burr up his ass about Saddam and his fictional WoMDs.

I honestly hope he manages to pull it off because it’d be one of the few bright spots of the eight years of hell we’ve been living through.

One sick, aging terrorist who will either die in exile or be made a martyr.  I couldn’t care less.

It does make me wonder, though…is this just a last-months attempt by Bush to stay relevant?  As evidenced over the last few years, the warmongers of America don’t need solid victories to stay encouraged.
So even if they never find him, they can say that they kept him on the run.  But it really wouldn’t surprise me if Osama were already in a bunker somewhere, just being kept on ice until oh, maybe mid-October.  If he’s actually still alive.

Its one last effort to say “LOOK! Republicans can get the job done! We caught the man responsible for 9/11! Now go vote for McCain!“

I only want Bin Laden to be killed by another Muslim, preferably someone from Saudi Arabia, for bringing a bad name on their faith.  Making him a martyr by the hand of the Great Satan, well, his sect is still pissed off over something that happened in the 1300’s.

I am really worried that Bush will invade Iran to get McCain elected.

It would be just as bad if he invaded Iran with Obama coming into the Presidency, the way his father handed Clinton the mess in Somalia.

If he’s elected Obama will be inheriting a lot of messes, and then by some bizarre logic be blamed if they aren’t all cleared up pronto.

I agree with Moloch… Bush is trying to help McCains election so the Republicans still own the WH.  I don’t think it will work, but if Bush had any real desire to catch Binny, he’d already have done it.  I don’t for a moment think that the next eight months are going to be any different than the previous seven years, but if he DOES catch Binny now, I would have to ask the question: Why did it take so long?

On the other hand, this could be a set up so he can say “Bin Laden is in Iran.  We have to invade.“

bets?

I’d bet 2:1 its an Iran plot instead of an election plot.

If he gets us tangled with Iran then Obama will have no choice but to fight it out.

If Bush gets America mixed up in Iran, then the only chance of avoiding an intercultural conflict is for the majourity of europe to declare that they will support Iran if it needs asistance in defense (to mention america would be slightly too much, a generalisation about defense would be less liable to actually cause a war) on condition that it scale down its nuclear projects and improves its human rights record. America would be unwilling to attack if there was likely to be an actual army against them, as opposed to civilians, so it could avoid a mass conflict.

I wonder at terms “renewed hunt”.  Isn’t this something Bush & Co. should have been doing all along?  If it isn’t (which I suspect) then what the hell made them stop?  If they have been actively hunting Bin Laden all this time, then there’s just one more feather in the administrations already well-festooned incompetence cap.

his sect is still pissed off over something that happened in the 1300’s.

Not to that other Abrahamic sect some of whose members still hate the original Abrahamic sect for what they did to a dangerous revolutionary.  Or those members who think that women are second class citizens because of a story about fruit.

Unfortunately a lot on the right, especially Americans still believe the lie OBL=Iraq.  The world supported the invasion of Afganistan.  Now the fundies are on the rise their because of the cock up in Iraq, and they have breathing space because the Shrub was too busy trying to impress Daddy’s freinds in attacking Saddam.  Iraq meant we took our eyes off the ball in Kabul, allowing the Taliban to get a foot hold.

It is just talk.  If Bush really wanted Osama he would put Brownie in charge of the hunt.

Osama bin Laden? What was he accused of again - conspiring with terrorists or something?

Heck, there’s one good thing about the Iran stuff (I don’t really believe anything that big will happen, BUT…).

It will be over quick unless Bush actually *invades* Iran. Oh yeah, he can royally fuck it up and further ruin the US reputation (Encore! Encore!) but it won’t be the same as in Iraq, unless he can suddenly conjure up a couple dozen more divisions of fresh troops.
