Creationists seem to be in charge here

{name} picJust stumbled across this site while looking for something else, but it looks quite interesting. Thought you folks might like to hear some interesting news from the Inaugural AHA (American Humanist Assoc) summit last week.

(Here is a link with an overview of the summit: http://www.humaniststudies.org/enews/index.html?id=176)

Any way, some interesting things were reported by Barry Lynn of Americans United for Separation of Church and State:

  • 65% of Americans believe that the Earth is only 6,000 years old.

  • the school board decision to place stickers on Pennsylvania school biology textbooks calling evolution only a theory was recently overturned by the judge ruling on the case on the grounds of being religiously motivated. At the same time, however, the Dover school district decided that Intelligent Design is to be taught alongside evolution in books such as Of Pandas and People.

  • He mentioned that when he invited the National Association of Biology Teachers to talk about creationism in schools, few teachers showed up, and those who did said that they had hoped no one else from their school would see them at the meeting (since the creationists have become so politically threatening).

...and so it goes.

In school, we had a similar game, we called (In German) ‘dotzballl’

We did, in fact, call it ‘Völkerball’. Go figure.

People like to remain ignorant as fuck because they’re happy that way. Moromns stay Morman because they’re happy (though I believe anyone stupid enough to believe Mormonism should be hit on the head with a knife). Christians say Christian because “there is no evidence that there is not a God”. Now, I don’t know about you, but if I have no evedince for OR against something, I’m not going to believe it.

Creationsm != Science

I have to say, I am astounded by your hospitality.  In researching both sides, with an open mind, I have noticed that Christians are nice at least the first 10 minutes you talk to them.  However, sincerity is a virtue. Hey, I don’t have time to be an expert in everything, but I’ll try.  Off to go researching.  But, I’ll have you know that if you ever need any information on caring for two-toed sloths, don’t come crying to me, you sloth ignorant fuckers.

Sincerely,
Dr. Tracy (two- toed slothologists and Mrs. Greene’s 3rd grade class dodgeball champion)

Wow thats funny as all get out there.

Christians are nice at least the first 10 minutes you talk to them

its been my experiance on this site that the christians often come on in with blazing hellfire, warning us of our impending doom.
I dont consider you telling me im going to hell nice.

Dr. Tracy

you are an exception.  You didnt come in mean, just uninformed.

And hey TheBo$$.. what made you think mormonism is worse or less intelligent than any other form of christianity?  The reason other xtians hate them so much is because the believe not only in God.. but that they too will become Gods.

MRK, no one else has addressed this but it’s an important point:  Barbare Eden…. DAAAaaammn!  I mean, you’re talking the top 3 or 4 as far as I’m concerned.

OK, back to evolution… heh.

Tracy, give me a good reason to be nice to you and I’ll be nice to you. So far all you’ve done is show up and spout off the same tired questions we’ve been hit with time and again here without bothering to even attempt to do a little research on your own or checking the archives to see if we’ve already been over those questions previously.

If you were the first person to show up and we’d never been asked those questions before then I’d be a helluva lot nicer than I have been, but you’re not and as such you get the benefit of having worn my patience with you dolts to the point that being nice is the least of my concerns.

As for information on the caring for two-toed sloths, if there should ever be an occasion that I happen to find myself in charge of such a beast and it needed caring for, I can assure you that you would be the last person on the planet I’d bother to ask for advice about it. Instead I’d do what I normally do when I need solid information on a topic: I’d find a good book on the topic and study up.

The Kent Hovind Thread would be a good place for Tracy to start.
That is actually the first thing I read here at SEB.

I’m with you, les.  Fuck being nice to a bunch of willfully obtuse Jeebofascist fuckwits.  The motherfuckers are dangerous as the fully intend on rolling back modern Western society and the enlightenment and creating a new Dark Ages.

To hell with them.  They are the enemy and deserve every bit of ridicule they get.  The Jeebofascist American fundies are a far bigger threat to our way of life than Islam or all of the other brown people on Earth that the the fundies have manufactured into a “hey, look over there” enemy/distraction.

I agree no need to be “nice” to believers - niceness is overrated.  Maybe Tracy will get the picture from Les’ obvious ire that they need to do more research before making claims.

But most likely they don’t intend on rolling back modern Western society and the enlightenment and creating a new dark age.  That would be an unintended consequence.  They’re probably not thinking, “Gee, it would be great to have people living without refrigeration or clean water, and calling exorcists for common illnesses!“

More likely they just haven’t thought about it all that much - the implications of supernaturalism vs. human progress.  Or if they have thought about it, they’ve got all their information from sources that twist the facts to promote a specific view.

Wet noodle or not, the Hovind thread is a good place to start.  At least it’ll keep ‘em busy for a while.

Hello Tracy,

I recommend reading “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” by Carl Sagan.  Sagan (now deceased) was an astronomer and popular science writer who is interested in educating the public on scientific issues.  In this book, he addresses the basic, almost universal, need for humans to have some idea of where they came from.  He talks about how religion filled that roll in the past, and how science has been replacing religion as a tool for exploring human history and development.  “Pale Blue Dot” and “The Dragons of Eden” are also written by Sagan and are along the same lines.

WyldPirate, it’s not so much that I feel I don’t have to be nice to those I disagree with in as much as I was just annoyed at being asked the same silly questions yet again. There are plenty of believers that I’m not only nice to, but great friends with. The Fundamentalists garner the most of my ire, but I can even be nice to them when they’re not being annoying.

Les,

I suppose I should apologize for my intemperate response to Tracy.  I probably shouldn’t have lowered the boom on him (or maybe her) so quickly, particularly without giving him/her more rope to hang on and without gauging his/her true intentions, but I’ve reached the end of my rope with this sort of willfull ingorance/stupidity from religious folk.  While you are right that some of religious folks are good people.  And like you, I also have friends that are believers.  That doesn’t chance the fact that they are wrong re: creation (from the literal perspective in Genesis and ID).  IT also doesn’t chance the fact that many of them willfully lie in order to maintain their facade of belief.  I think that the many of the worst of these folks are simply terrified that their whole myth would come crashing down in their laps if they faced reality.  Fewer, but more dangerous, are those that have an agenda for perpetrating these lies.

I’m a microbiologist and I’ve been arguing with deluded Christians for over 10 years on line and longer—particularly with fundies in my family—in person.  I’ve had students who are studying to be biologists come up to me after class and tell me they don’t “believe” in evolution because of the Bible.  I’ve been patient for years and shot down crap like this “original protoplasm”, the conflation of the origin of life with the origin of species.  I’ve corrected the quotes out of context and nearly every other sort of willful, crazed misrepresentation and “little lie to advance the cause of God” that these Jeebofascist fundies come up with.

These arguments rational folks living in the reality-based world have with the creationists and Id’ists on evolution are not mere disagreements of a philosophical nature.  They are disagreements between people who have facts and evidence supporting the most comprehensive paradigm in all of science versus those that believe in fantasy.  When the creationists and ID morons trot out their chickenshit arguments they should be gang-tackled, ridiculed and have their faces rub in their chickenshit arguments.  If they are willfully lying, they should be called liars.  If they are being willfully obtuse, they should be called stupid fuckwits.  They will neither understand or respect anything else.  Niceness will be perceived as weakness because they have an agenda or because they are intellectual cowards.  Thise with an agenda seek to make people submissive and too cowed to question authority so the grip of the myth of the Invisible Sky Daddy can deepen its roots in society.

We have seen the fruits of this sort of madness over the last four years with Bush.  He and his handlers have resurrected many of the fears and hatreds and diversions based in the Bible to distract the ignorant sheeple so crimes and murders can be committed to enrich a few.  They simply deny reality or invent their own to suit them just as long as it keeps the sheeple in line and distracts them.  Religion is meant to control people and keep them in line so they chase the imaginary “carrot” at the end of life while they get fucked up the ass by the clergy and those holding power.

I’m done with their games and being nice to them.  Fuck ‘em.  If they lie and distort in the name of their Invisible Sky Daddy and I see it, then I’m going to go nuclear on ‘em.  It’s time to grow a spine and quit getting steamrolled by the bastards.

DOF,

Of course you’re right in that the Jeebofascists may not intend on starting a new Dark Ages, but that could be an unintended consequence.  the problem is that these bastards don’t anticipate consequences as we’ve seen illustrated by Preznit Chimpolean.

Tracy sez: “So WyldPirate has risen to the level of condeming people to hell, sounds familiar.“

No, sorry you superstitious fuckwit.  I’ve not spent my entire live quivering in fear of the ultimate imaginary boogyman neighborhood dreamed up by some two millenia old con artist(s) that wrote Revelation.  I will admit that whomever tied the whole scam of Christianity together dreamed up one of the best con games going.  Their little “carrot and stick” act has been useful in keeping the gullible, stupid and ignorant sheeple in line for centuries with the added benefit of conning them out of mountains of coin.  Of course they likely did that by ripping off the Jewish concept of Gehenna  and mangling Jewish tradition and/or using a mangled translations from Greek, Latin or Hebrew.  Nonetheless, Hell has been a useful tool for keeping intellectually indolent fuckwits in line for 20+ centuries.

Your brain, such as it is, will simply quit functioning when, in your case, your two neurons stop depolarizing and prevent you from transmitting an electrical impulse between the single synapse buried deep within your thick noggin.  Then your Imaginary Sky Daddy that your culture has convinced you is real via brainwashing and constant repetitive ritual will cease to exist.  Then you will most likely rot in an overpriced coffin after you’ve been pumped full of overpriced chemicals so you don’t stink up the joint while your loved ones grieve over your carcass for a few days or your corpse will be burned.

I also don’t believe in souls in the Christian sense so I don’t think you are going to get Raptured up to sit with your Invisible Sky Daddy and eat Cheetos while you watch us infidels and sinners backstroke through your imaginary lake of fire.  I think that souls are nothing more than a “just-so” story invented by ignorant fucks that are: a.)scared shitless of the unknown and what happens after death, b.) seek to immortalize themselves in some manner since it is clear that their body will rot which even they cannot deny given the evidence, and c.) seek to elevate themselves above mere “animals” simply because the have a complex brain capable of abstract thought.

So once again, I didn’t condemn you to hell.  You, on the other hand, seem to have condemned yourself to something far worse from my POV—a lifetime of ignorance, cowardice and hubris because you desperately hope that you are somehow special.  Because of these things you’ve bought your cultural myths lock, stock and barrel.  Perhaps that is just as well because too many folks would likely go insane with worry about what happens after death if they didn’t have a comforting myth to believe in.
