My guess is because it deals with aliens, and the Bible never mentioned them. It gets people to thinking what WAY other’s religions might be.

For some reason it makes me think of Greater Tuna.

Having read To Kill a Mockingbird, and the only way I could see it being offensive would be if you are a racist. It has to be one of the greatest works of literature of the 20th century, and should be mandatory in schools.

Okay a couple of things, I have read To Kill a Mockingbird. It was mandatory for us, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. To ban a book of anykind is to ban thought.

There was a movie my civics teacher had us watch called Fahrenheit 451. I hope the world never comes to that!

It may have been 4 years ago since I read it, but I don’t remember Of Mice and Men being particularly offensive. Unless you consider the relationship between the two main characters to be a homosexual one, but, eh.

This is probably why kids turn to video games. There’s nothing left to read!

Why did they want to ban “The Martian Chronicals”?  Why did a group want to ban “Little Red Riding Hood”? Turns out, the cover of the copy in question had a wine bottle in the basket and they feared the picture would condone drinking. Sheesh!

Talk about a group of people needing a life!

ladies and gentlemen the above post regarding the book ban is not represented by the majority of “low IQ” christians.... this must be some representation of the “very-low IQ” faction of the christian faith.

We from the “low IQ” family do not promote banning any books, and spending our precious time on getting people not to believe.  We feel that our best efforts will be served in focusing on the one book we (christians) are supposed to believe in.

please do not confuse those of us who are believed to be mildly insane with those who are thoroghly insane.

I must admit that Randall’s post made me laugh out loud.

In a good way.

It’s high time we start registering childrens’ religion and making them wear religious identity cards, or something.  Now, before all you Bill-O-Rights fundamentalists start getting upset and pulling our your shortguns from the truck rack, let me tell you why this is a good idea.

We need to protect our children.

Employing methods perfected during JimCrow and HueyLong’s righteous reign, we can setup certain areas of the library where Christians are not allowed to wander.  Or, better, we can forbid Christian children from reading or checking out certain books.  Color code the books, too, so you can see who is carrying what material.  Of course, this could could only be achieved through readily identifiable ID’s or markings on the kids (some have proposed a yellow cross worn over the heart and on the right shoulder blade—so you can tell a Christian from the back or front).

Using this reasonable solution we not only protect Christians from all sorts of uncomfortable facts and fictions, but our secular-humanist children, reconstructionist Judaic kids, Bahaists, or others of more liberal and learned persuasions can continue to read and learn without these pesky Christian kids dirtying up all our books.

I have never seen anything rack up book sales faster than a call by some group to ban the book.

Who would have read “Satanic Versus” if not for the free advertising it received by aprice on the author’s head?

“Catcher in the Rye” and most works by Steinbeck and Twain are still well read because groups tell kids not to read them.

My own experience...I was listening to a Catholic radio station one time (don’t ask...I normally wouldn’t :-p) and they started explaining why it was totally justified that this new book “Harry Potter” should be banned in a Western Michigan school. I literally did an immediate U-turn and went to Borders to pick it up.

Hey… I’m a christian, and I agree with that Randall guy… But, this is overreacting a little? Its only a book, read it if you want to.

For any christian out there (beleive me, every christian told me this, my priests and everything) examine every relegion you can find, and choose the one that you feel is right. If you choose wrong? Just go to hell )))) I don’t really care. I’m a christian. My school library is filled with books like “What my mother doesen’t know about” I read them. Their cool. They don’t do anything to me.

The Martian Chronicles? It’s been 20+ yrs since I’ve read it, but doesn’t it have a segment wherein a narrator discusses Martian Religion? Something like ‘..they merged science with their religion and art...’
I remeber that making an impression on me. But then, I was quite the impressionable kid....
