We’ve been saving our pennies in anticipation of the release of Serenity and today we’re going to spend them on a early afternoon showing. I’m very pleased to see the movie is averaging an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes so far and I hope it leads to more adventurers in the future. I’ll let you guys know what I think of the film when we get back.

Update: Excellent film. Go see it. I laughed. I cried. I wanna see it again, but can’t afford to at the moment.

I saw it last night, and I’ve been gushing about it since.

It’s everything Sith should’ve been.

Fan-freaking-tastic (keep in mind that this is coming from a Firefly fan who went with 8 other fans of the series to the earliest show we all had available).

Seriously.

All the talk on the street is that it is amazing. From what I head about the screenings they did, 1 in LA followed by 10 different cities, followed by 20 different cities, each screening selling out within 24 hours. I suspect that it will do very well.

My hope is that since Mr. Whedon isn’t allowed to air Firefly on another network other than Fox, that he will make a series and go straight to DVD and use the web for distribution. Assuming he can that is.

I would gladly buy Firefly episodes without having seen them first. No problem what so ever.

I never saw all the episodes of the series, though I did want to. It’s such an interesting blend of Western story with a Sci-Fi backdrop. And, let’s be honest, the dialogue is simply fantastic.

Went to see it with my dad last night. I probably shouldn’t have dragged him along, because he’d never seen the series and hates science fiction in general, so (of course) he had no ability to follow what the heck was going on and didn’t like it at all.

I, on the other hand, was fascinated with the story, the characters, and the dialogue, and immediately put the series DVD on my Amazon wish list when I got home! Let me just say: this kind of dialogue (yeah, I keep harping on it!) is exactly what’s been missing from so many almost-good movies in recent years. Wonderful writing.

After one viewing (I’m thinking about going again!), there’s only one thing that I really didn’t like about the film: the “explanation” for the Reavers. I feel that they were much scarier and more interesting without that explanation. Just my take on it.

1. Firefly can be aired outside of Fox—it’s been airing on SciFi lately. I believe Fox has to give permission, though ...

2.  Series is available on DVD.  Very fine deal.

3.  As to the minor spoiler—yes, to some degree.  However, bear in mind that this was an explanation that was to have come much later into the series, by which time the bogie-man nature of the Reavers would have been more ready to be finally explained.  And it *is* a very, very cool concept, esp. within the theme of the show.

I thought the movie was great.  Not flawless, but so much fun and lovingly put together, it just knocks my socks off.

I had no problems with the explanation. I had an inkling it was something along those lines from back in the series just based on what the Reavers looked like and what we knew about the Alliance.

There’s at least one thing that wasn’t explained that I had hoped would be in the film, but I don’t want to end up making this into a spoiler thread so I’ll hold off for now.

I loved the film, but I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to watch it again. I actually felt kinda sick for the last half hour of it. If you’ve seen it, you can guess why. Suffice it to say I’m both amazed that a movie could elicit such a strong reaction from me, and dismayed that certain events massively dimished my enjoyment of the film, if not my respect for it. It’s too bad though, because I had planned on going a few times to help up the box office, and there’s no way I’m going to now. I hope others didn’t react as strongly as I did.

Also: Damn you, Joss! DAAAAAAAAMN YOOOOOOU!!!! You got me. AGAIN.
