SG may be referring to the amount of loan paper that China has on our country.  Our deficit spending involves borrowing money, a great deal of it from China and more from our loyal friends in the Middle East.

Plus it’s getting virtually impossible to buy certain things that are’nt made in China- most things plastic for example.

Yes, it is often slave labour, but when they have cornered the market in many basics, its hard not to buy.

with current economy crisis American construction workers cant find themselves jobs so what would happen if you let in foreigners who charge half the price.

Part of the reason American workers can’t find jobs is because labor costs are prohibitively expensive and noncompetitive. Strangely enough, this is indicative that the US has a labor shortage. We don’t have enough workers to justify the expense of American manufacturing, a situation that would begin to equalize if there were more workers. That’s the whole reason why China has such an advantage in the first place, their labor costs are cheap as hell and they don’t particularly care if they salt the earth in their rush to industrialize to modern levels. They’ll pay the price for it in ten or twenty years.

And “dude,” a billion Chinese people are a billion consumers. It doesn’t matter what Chinese people make anymore than it matters that Americans made cars before the Japanese began to. All that matters is that you’re making a competitive product at a competitive price, and with the US dollar tanking thanks to Bush’s shitty business sense we’ve got a fairly attractive exchange rate going on in some places. China would really just be a feather in the cap if American manufacturing were to come back enough to make even a small dent in our imports, just enough to impact the monetary flow some and reduce the trade deficit. Why? Because to do it by also raising the population by a few million people in a short period of time would also increase our buying power and our demand for goods.

As for the democracy comment, that’s just chickenshit bullshit. If the Chinese wanted democracy they could have it next week, the same way nearly every other successful democracy has managed it: kill the people in power and tear the mother down. That’s not something you have done for you, despite everything that Bush has been peddling for the last decade. It’s something you want for yourself and your kids and stir up at home.

At the very least no one really wants the US to successfully invade China, since the proper way to do that against the massive boots-on-ground advantage the Chinese would bring to the table would be to nuke the ever-loving hell out the country from top to bottom and pick up the shattered pieces afterwards. It wouldn’t be nearly as pretty as anything anyone’s really done since Carthage, there’s just no other way imaginable.

In any case, plugging a population rush into the country is really absolutely the only way the economy is going to compete with low cost global labor. Bleed the low cost labor from other countries and import the people into the US, strengthening the economy and increasing the tax base. It might be a scary, chaotic marketplace while things are being hammered out, but it’s how the US came to be the country it used to be in the first place. Huddled masses, it’s the trick.

Right! That’s exactly my point. There is no one to hire for those jobs so they hire illegals instead. Because no Americans want to work the job. In other words, Americans aren’t losing jobs to illegals, they are letting illegals work a job they do not want to work. I have yet to meet anyone that has lost a job to an illegal immigrant.

No they won’t. Despite an increase in foreign market penetration in the agricultural and food sectors, the US is still producing a hell of a lot of food. In fact, with all that cheaper labor the agricultural and food service industries will be filled out quite nicely compared to recent decades - with labor that would actually be taxed and regulated.

Low taxes mean faster consumer spending, but when every or nearly every product is produced overseas the money spent doesn’t circulate properly back into the tax base. You get a fiction of growth without any real value, while you basically starve the country of currency like every failed Republican enthusiast for three decades. You can do what you’re suggesting, if you’ve got the right kind of economy. We don’t anymore, because we need to increase our manufacturing and low end labor pool to compete with globalization.

America isn’t making anything much anymore except money and consumers. That’s the basic problem. I also find your assumption that the US is fighting “oil wars” as a monetary issue beyond the local discussion absurd. The economic problem of Iraq isn’t about the oil, it’s about the conditions of garrisoning a large standing army overseas with a lengthy supply line that was designed for short, catastrophically aggressive conflicts in Eastern Europe. Our military was never meant to be parked anywhere but at home. Economically everything else is extraneous and useless information.

Public transportation will never be anything but a local issue in the United States. It’s simply too large and the construction costs are too high to accommodate a vastly dispersed rural population. Well, I opened a can of beans with my comments!  What I MEANT was that we’ve borrowed so much money from overseas (yes, China) to fund our extravagant way of life that our national debt is through the roof.  Everybody wants services, but nobody wants to pay taxes.  The government does what every chicken elected official does, borrow the money.  The Romans did it long ago - bread and circuses.  Their lifestyle ruined their economy.  Our lifestyle is ruining ours, too.  We *don’t* have to buy goods from China.  It’s hard, but we can get goods from closer to home.
