Bishop declares flying and driving big cars sinful! REPENT OR BURN!

Seems a British Bishop over in London has decided to take it upon himself to inform everyone that they’re being selfish sin-loving bastards if they fly when taking a vacation:

In a highly controversial statement, Richard Chartres, 59 - who admits to regular visits to Russia - urged Christians to stop taking endless flights and to live a more ‘eco-friendly’ lifestyle.

He said: “There is now an overriding imperative to walk more lightly upon the earth and we need to make our lifestyle decisions in that light.

“Making selfish choices such as flying on holiday or buying a large car are a symptom of sin.

“Sin is not just a restricted list of moral mistakes. It is living a life turned in on itself where people ignore the consequences of their actions.“

Can you say “hypocrite?“ I knew you could!

While I agree that it would be nice if folks tried to be a little more eco-conscious in their day to day lives, something I’m trying to be considerate of myself, I think declaring it a sin isn’t going to accomplish much beyond getting a lot of people to laugh at you.

I mean it’s not like all those other sins being sins has stopped very many Christians from engaging in them…

He may be on to something there.  I just hope he took the train to Russia, though.

BTW does anyone know of a good analysis of the relative carbon-per-passenger-mile output of various types of transportation?

If all you have is a Bible, everything looks like a sin.

“Sin is not just a restricted list of moral mistakes. It is living a life turned in on itself where people ignore the consequences of their actions.?

I actually heard the interview this morning.  His argument was that living a self destructive lifestyle is a sin- and contributing to the death of the planet is about as self destructive as you can get.  He tried to couch in it religeous terms, which was his down fall.  However, unless your a neo-con, most people would agree that we should try not to damage the planet for our children.

As much as I hate to agree with a religious nut, he may be on to something.  I agree with Les that declaring all the other sins as bad hasn’t stopped anyone from committing them, but this may be able to get some of the whackjobs out there to start thinking critically about their beliefs, which in turn could lead them away from those beliefs, or at the very least encourage them to change some of their habits.

I know lots of people that has occurred to, myself included. It’s not a fast or painless process by any means, and it does have a really high rate of failure, but getting religious minds to think critically is a great first step.

Not that it will probably work.  This guy will either be tossed out as a heretic or something like that and be outright rejected by the religious majority, or else his ideas will be accepted as new dogma and few will give too much thought about the reason for these things being sins.

Buzz: As much as I hate to agree with a religious nut, he may be on to something.

I also tentatively agree. It’s not often that you see a highly publicized Christian express concern for the environment. It’s unfortunate that the Bishop’s broader message (minus the silliness about “sin”) is unlikely to resonate with many people.

To a catholic, breathing is a sin because youre taking air away from everyone else for your own selfish needs and youre polluting his creation with your presence, carbon.  Big religions should stick to simply ruining people’s lives, it is their prime speciality.
On the other hand, the pollution is getting kinda out of hand, but were working on hybrids and solar powered vehicles to solve that sort of problem, even if it is a ways down the road.

Well I’d love to discuss this further, but I need to hop on my bike and go to work.  Fixing things isn’t that hard, we just need to, uh, actually do something.

Yo DOF, here are some carbon calculators if that is what you are looking for:
UK Carbon Dioxide Emissions
A US One
A More Complicated One

I did find one calculator that you could calculate how much of a “footprint” you left traveling on various modes of transportation.  You could input your miles of those various forms after you input how many miles you went with your car.  If I find it I will post it here.

Thanks, Webs.  I have seen the personal carbon calculators but I want one that compares planes, trains, and automobiles so to speak.

I have this wonderful movie in my fertile mind of DoF, dressed as Superman, flying and running behind planes, trains, and automobiles, doing his comparisons. LOL
