It seems Conservative Bill Bennett was stupid enough to go onto The Daily Show last night to debate the gay marriage amendment with Jon Stewart who promptly haded Mr. Bennett’s ass to him on the issue. Here’s a partial transcript from the folks at Crooks and Liars:

(rough transcript)

Stewart: So why not encourage gay people to join in in that family arrangement if that is what provides stability to a society?

Bennett: Well I think if gay..gay people are already members of families…

Stewart: What? (almost spitting out his drink)

Bennett: They’re sons and they’re daughters..

Stewart: So that’s where the buck stops, that’s the gay ceiling.

Bennett Look, it’s a debate about whether you think marriage is between a man and a women.

Stewart: I disagree, I think it’s a debate about whether you think gay people are part of the human condition or just a random fetish.

It makes this old leftie moonbat proud, lemme tell ya. Go check out the video clip at Crooks and Liars to enjoy the beat down yourself.

Ah, yes… wasn’t it simply fucking delicious?  Bennett couldn’t have looked more uncomfortable, or sounded more like the batshit crazy right wing lunatic that he is.  I loved when Jon Stewart put him on the spot about why Dick Cheney, über-conservative that he is, didn’t support a gay marriage ban.  His “personal experience” of a gay family member being his reason to disavow the codifying of discrimination in our Constitution is something nearly every American has, which is why the polls continue to demonstrate that the People themselves (as opposed to some of their congresspeople) don’t support a constitutional amendment banning same-sex unions.

Jesus, Bennett’s an asshole!

Have to admit I am absolutely flummoxed by the GOP’s willingness to actually screw with the constitution to make life harder for people who screw with each other.

Bennett - the platinum standard in hypocrisy.

Yes, Bennett had his ass handed to him on a silver platter- politely too.

When is Stewart going to run for an office? I need to know so I can move to that location and register to vote…

We need no-nonsense politicians who just take a fucking minute to look at something logically without pressure from outside forces and make a logical decision based on the evidence they receive.

I’m sick of religion in politics.
I’m sick of big buisness in politics.
I’m sick of war in politics.

Oh, my, that was splendid.

Another golden Stewart quote (on why “marriage” is in trouble as an institution):  “Divorce doesn’t occur because 50% of marriages end in gayness.”

I personally had a chuckle at Bennett bring out Stewart’s book… almost like a peace offering or a way to butter him up.  I’m pretty sure Stewart picked up on that and made it pretty clear that doesn’t work with him.

That was definitly awesome.  Stewart never stops ceasing to amaze me.  Maybe some day the political system in this country will change, and caring and intelligent politicians will step up who actually think logically rather than pandering to the latest trend, poll, or focus group.

What a great line. LOL
But whilst ever those bigots think gayness is a choice what can you expect?  downer

I’ve discovered that it all boils down to brain wiring: your brain is wired to worship magic or it isn’t, either it’s wired to utilize logic or it isn’t, either it’s analytical of myths or it isn’t.

Everyone please forgive me if I’ve told this one before, but even if being gay were a matter of choice, so what?  Why is love all about plumbing?  And why hasn’t the institution of marriage progressed beyond the lineage/chattel tradition it has always been?  Surely the main point is lifetime partnership.

There are probably some people who are able to choose to be gay or straight.  Naturally the Xtian right will attempt to hold them up as examples of normalcy.

The part that really amazes me, is that these people are worring about shit that really isn’t important.  I mean why worry about AIDS, starving nations, and a ruined environment, when Bob & Bill want to get married!  How dare they taunt our xtian morals?

And it pisses me off more that a majority of Americans blindy follow along, nodding their heads, shouting out a PRAISE JESUS!  Yup, lets not worry about real shit.

It takes more than one mention to get anything into my head these days. Thank you.
There’s only one problem with that as I see it. Batshit thick rightwing fanatics can only focus on plumbing - coz it’s level with their arse which in their case is interchangeable with their brain and, they feel secure in conservative ruts.
Yes, I know it doesn’t make sense but …
Shit, I go went the top again; now everyone will think I’m crazy … or a lefty. LOL

I’m afraid that’s exactly the point, Spoinky.  Since the Republicans don’t exactly have much to offer on these issues, and are doing a less than stellar job with Iraq and the budget, of course they want to divert voters’ attention to other hot button topics.

Speaking of the sanctity of marriage among Christians:

The Barna Research Group’s national study showed that members of nondenominational churches divorce 34 percent of the time in contrast to 25 percent for the general population. Nondenominational churches would include large numbers of Bible churches and other conservative evangelicals. Baptists had the highest rate of the major denominations: 29 percent. Born-again Christians’ rate was 27 percent. To make matters even more distressing for believers, atheists/agnostics had the lowest rate of divorce 21 percent.

An excellent point.
The gay_community has, for too long, traveled the the politically dangerous road of expounding upon homosexuality’s sometimes innate genetic, womb environment’s chemical origins.  In so doing, we abandon the most basic premise of Liberty.

You are free to act as you so fit, so long as it does no harm to others.

We are fast approaching the era when various traits of human nature are easily categorized as being either by-birth or by-choice.  When that day comes, and screenings are available (and mandated by law for the safety of the newborn), tolerance will reach an even lower point than today.

We’d be better to defend homosexuality, cross-dressing, et al, as a matter of liberty (and a life-choice that does no neighbor any harm, at all) than a matter of genetic-predisposition.

Otherwise, we’re selling the liberties of GayDom’s own minorities for the benefit of the majority’s.  That is wrong.
